THE PRIVILEGE OF GIVING IS SERVING CHRIST THROUGH HIS PEOPLE

A WORD FROM THE WORD:

"They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do." Galatians 2:10 NKJV.

The poor in this context are fellow believers, but that doesn't exclude unbelieving poor from those we should remember and reach out to.
Why does God allow so many of His children to be poor? He has the power to make them all rich if He pleased; He could lay bags of gold at their doors to be sold and make a fortune from; or He could divinely provide for them by raining around their homes abundance of provisions, as He once made the quails lie in heaps round the camp of the children of Israel, and rained bread out of heaven to feed them.

There is no human reason as to why these people should be poor, except that He sees it to be best.
He could make the richest, the greatest, and the mightiest bring all their power and riches to the feet of His children, because He has the hearts of all men under His control.
But He does not choose to do so; He allows them to suffer want, He allows them to pine in penury and obscurity.

Why is this?

Here are a few reasons:

1). To give those who are favoured with enough an opportunity of evidencing their love to the LORD Jesus.
We show our love to the LORD Jesus Christ when we sing of, and to Him, and when we pray to Him. But if there were no poor in the world, we would lose the sweet privilege of evidencing our love, by ministering in alms-giving to His poorer brethren.

2). The LORD has ordained that we should prove that our love stands not in word only, but in truth and in deed.
If we truly love the LORD, we should care for those who are loved by Him. Those who are dear to Him will be dear to us.

Let us not then look upon it as a duty but as a privilege to give, and relieve the poor of the LORD's flock, remembering the words of the LORD Jesus, 'Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' (Matthew 25:40 NIV).
Surely this assurance is sweet enough, and the motive, strong enough to lead us to help others with a willing hand and a loving heart, remembering that all we do for the LORD's people is graciously accepted by Him as done to Himself.

PRAYER BULLETS:

LORD Jesus, thank You for the privilege of being Your outstretched arms. Help me to continue on this path of remembering the poor and lending assistance to them as much, and as often as I should, to your eternal glory.

FURTHER READING:

Psalm 50:10; Proverbs 19:17; 21:1; Matthew 25:40.
