In the Bible, God gave two different kinds of laws. One was the Ten Commandments, which teach us what is right and wrong and show us how to love God and love other people. This law never changes, because it reflects God’s own character. The other law was the Ceremonial Law, which included sacrifices and special ceremonies. These ceremonies were like pictures pointing forward to Jesus and His sacrifice for us. When Jesus died on the cross, He became the true sacrifice that all those animal offerings pointed to. Because of this, the ceremonial law came to an end—it had completed its purpose. But the Ten Commandments were not ended at the cross. Jesus Himself said that not even the smallest part of God’s law will pass away as long as heaven and earth remain. So the sacrifices stopped when Jesus died, but the Ten Commandments still stand today, just as firm and sure as God’s throne in heaven.
