THE PERIL OF SPIRITUAL COMPROMISE
A WORD FROM THE WORD:
"Remember what happened to Lot’s wife!" Luke 17:32 NLT.
Though our anchor text is one of the shortest verses in the Bible, it contains a whole lot. Why would the LORD Jesus single out Lot's wife from about the 170 women mentioned in the Bible, and admonish that we remember her? Reason may not be far-fetched, she offers a solemn warning about making foolish choices in view of eternity.
The family of Lot, Abraham's nephew received clear instructions about the impending destruction of Sodom, and were directed to flee out of the city without looking back (Genesis 19:14-26). But tragically, Lot’s wife could not resist looking back. She compromised on the spiritual injunction and disobediently stole a glance backward and was turned into a pillar of salt immediately. And the LORD Jesus is asking us to remember her as among other things we shouldn't be, 'a monument of spiritual compromise.'
It's always a heartbreaking situation to our heavenly Father to see us, His children, fall into sin and disgrace as a result of being taken by temptation. Though He is able to forgive us if we confess our sins and repent, but the scars are indelible. When the LORD Jesus says 'Remember what happened to Lot's wife.' He's simply admonishing us against the high cost of sin, and the peril of spiritual compromise and worldly attachment, these leads one to foolishly and longingly hold on to the things of this world.
PRAYER BULLETS:
LORD Jesus, forgive me for foolishly and longingly holding on to fleshly and worldly desires, failing to obediently follow Your Will for me.
FURTHER READING:
Genesis 19:14-26; Matthew 6:24; 1 John 2:15-17; Luke 9:62.
