1. Evening Prayer

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ⏤ Isaiah 1:18

The best remedy for a troubled heart is to focus on God’s unchanging character. ⏤ Charles Stanley

O Lord, we bow before You in loving reverence. All our blessings come from You, and we praise You. We are sinful, and You are holy. We are not worthy to approach You, yet You have made a way for us to draw near to You with confidence, as children to a Father. Lord, cleanse our hearts as we come to You. Fill us with Your Spirit so that, renewed in the spirit of our minds, we may display all the virtues and graces of the Christian life in our daily walk.

We need Your cleansing tonight after the day's journey in this sin-stained world. Our feet have been soiled in the dust as we walked through the day, our hands have been stained with the evil around us, our lips have spoken words we should not have spoken, and our hearts have been made unclean by wrong thoughts, feelings, and imaginations. Cleanse us tonight. Wash us, and we shall be whiter than snow!

We have cares and worries that distract us at the end of the day. Help us to lay them all in Your hands and leave them there. Give us Your peace. Help us to cast our burdens on You and trust that You will take care of them. Make all things work together for our good.

Have pity tonight, O God, on this sorrowful, sinful world. Remember the poor and open the hearts of those who have plenty to help those in need. Look with compassion on the sick and give them relief or the patience to endure their pain. Comfort those who are in sorrow. Hear us in these evening prayers, we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

2. Gratitude

By Gábor Muzslai therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name
- Hebrews 13:15

We cannot praise God without thanking God. That is the clear implication of this verse.

The praise to which we are called must be continual; and it must consist, at the very least, of our lips giving thanks to his name. And, most importantly, it is only praise when it is by Jesus.

When you come to God in prayer, what percentage of the time do you spend in thanksgiving? What is the first thing you usually say to God in prayer? Is it "Please..." or is it "Thank you..."? Is it petition or is it gratitude which you most often bring to God?

There is certainly nothing wrong with making our needs and desires known to God in prayer. However, we cannot properly praise God unless we also bring with us conscious, grateful words of praise to his name, for all he has done.

This is not to be an occasional or thoughtless exercise of duty, but the continual bent of our heart when we are in the presence of God. Such a consistent attention to gratitude will not only foster in us a joyful appreciation for all our blessings, but it will also guard us from temptations toward envy and discontentment.

For what should we be most grateful? To whom do we owe our greatest praise and gratitude? By whose authority and grace are we even allowed entrance to God in prayer? It is by Jesus, and for Jesus, that our greatest thanks should be offered to God. http://www.baptistbiblehour.org/resources/devotional/gratitude-9/

Daily Bible Study
This phrase "leech has two daughters, Give and Give" is from a common byword of the day, which spoke about people who never have enough. It was a reference to greedy and narcissistic people as well as bad situations that never seem to end. The description itself comes from the two bloodsucking mouths of the "House Leech" which lived off of the blood of its victim. Here in these passages, it's used to paint a picture of the insatiably greedy or self-centered person who always wants more from others and never gives anything in return.

Moreover, these two passages as a whole speak of wickedness, evil and the nature of our fallen world. They are never full, wickedness and evil always want more! Sin will never be satisfied until it has completely destroyed its victim. After which it will move on to look for new hosts to destroy. That is why we look to Jesus! It is He alone who has lifted us out of the mire of sin and placed us firmly on the rock of His salvation. Thereby saving us from the destruction of this world and a life of sin. A world which we know from God's word is passing away.
