2. Do you have patience & hope?
3. Do you know that exalting yourself brings judgement?

1. Evening Prayer

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. ⏤ Proverbs 22:6

The prayer meeting is the pulse of the church. ⏤ Robert Murray M'Cheyne

Father, Your favor is life, and Your love is eternal life. We live today only because Your grace upholds us. We thank You for the many mercies You’ve shown us this day. We’ve enjoyed health, and our needs have been provided for. We’ve been protected from harm, disease, and accidents. Our evening is peaceful because of Your surrounding blessings. We thank You for the shelter of our home, the love that fills it, and the friends who enrich our lives. We also thank You for Christian books and the inspiring thoughts they bring, encouraging us to live beautifully, nobly, and worthily. Most of all, we thank You for the Bible and the divine words it brings to us.

Help us to make good use of all these blessings. May we have the grace to fully appreciate these privileges, so we can stand before You without shame when called to account.

Tonight, we carry many burdens on our hearts. We pray for all schools, colleges, and institutions of learning. May they be fountains of good and holy influence, raising the children and youth of our land in the fear of God while preparing them for useful lives. Bless all teachers—may their lives be pure, their teaching and example worthy of the young lives entrusted to them. We pray for all homes. Make them Christlike. May mothers and fathers grow in holiness, so they can wisely guide the young lives in their care. We ask these blessings in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

2. Patience and Hope

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines...yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation
- Habakkuk 3:17-18

What a wonderful encouragement from such a dark and discouraging prophecy!

While the prophet Habakkuk struggled with the fact that God was going to send a terrible and decimating judgment on rebellious Israel, he eventually came to realize that God is sovereign. Although his chastening may not feel good, or yield immediate fruit, it is always right and good and it is always his prerogative to allow it.

Habakkuk ends the record of his struggles with this great declaration: although suffering may come, although pleasures and provision may run dry, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. The Lord, not my surroundings, is my salvation!

Habakkuk's profound response to the horror he and his people are about to face is, quite simply, faith in God. It is faith which does not depend on circumstances to be sustained. It is faith which does not require prosperity or mental/emotional acuity to persist. It is faith which is able to say when the storm clouds gather, "Thy will be done."

Habakkuk had come to know that God was beautiful. And he could see that whatever God had for him was the very best. Only true faith can say that. Only true faith can see God as "the God of my salvation" when joyful deliverance seems so elusive and God himself so distant. May that faith be yours today. http://www.baptistbiblehour.org/resources/devotional/patience-and-hope-9/

Exalting Ourselves Brings God’s Judgment on Us – (Proverbs 30:32-33)
Exalting Ourselves Brings God’s Judgment on Us – (Proverbs 30:32-33)

Daily Proverbs

If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, Or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth. For as the churning of milk produces butter, And wringing the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife.
Daily Bible Study
The Bible tells us until the time of Christ’s return this world is under the influence of the “prince of the power of the air”, who is Satan. In addition, because of the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, we all live in a fallen world where death and sin have become commonplace. Together they form the darkness that is presently at work in the world. Controlling the hearts of men and women who do not know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. And one of the strongest messages sent to us by this world of darkness is we need to exalt ourselves. That somehow an overabundance of pride and ego are a good thing, that the world is really about us and seeking the fulfillment of our desires.

And that’s what Agur is speaking against in these passages. If any of us have been so foolish as to spend time exalting ourselves, then we need to stop now. We need to put our hands over our mouth in shame. If we have been devising evil for our own self gain, then we are to stop it and put our hands over our mouth in shame. This gesture of putting one’s hand over their mouth was a sign of self-imposed silence. It was a sign of repentance over what was just spoken or thought. And Agur is saying if we do not stop ourselves, if we don’t catch ourselves and we continue on this course of evil and exalting ourselves, then just as churning produces butter, or a punch in the nose produces blood. So to God’s judgment on us for our wicked behavior will produce destruction and harm in our lives.

4. We All Need Help.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

Every one of us needs help. We are not God. We have needs. We have weaknesses. We have confusion. We have limitations of all kinds. We need help.

But every one of us has something else: We have sins. And therefore at the bottom of our hearts we know that we do not deserve the help we need. And so we feel trapped.

I need help to live my life, and to handle death, and to cope with eternity — help with my family, my spouse, my children, my loneliness, my job, my health, my finances. I need help. But I don’t deserve the help I need.

So what can I do? I can try to deny it all and be a superman or a superwoman, who doesn’t need any help. Or I can try to drown it all and throw my life into a pool of sensual pleasures. Or I can simply give way to the paralysis of despair.

But God declares over this hopeless situation: Jesus Christ became a High Priest to shatter that despair with hope, and to humble that superman or superwoman, and to rescue that drowning wretch.

Yes, we all need help. Yes, none of us deserves the help we need. But no to despair and pride and lechery. Look at what God says. Because we have a Great High Priest, the throne of God is a throne of grace. And the help we get at that throne of grace is mercy and grace to help in time of need. Grace to help! Not deserved help — gracious help. That’s why the High Priest, Jesus Christ, shed his own blood.

You are not trapped. Say no to that lie. We need help. We don’t deserve it. But we can have it. You can have it right now and forever. If you will receive and trust in your High Priest, Jesus the Son of God, and draw near to God through him.
