Presentation of Mary

This celebration was said to have been originated, when the basilica of Saint Mary the New built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian-I in the year 543, near the ruins of the Temple of Jerusalem. This is the celebration of the dedication of Virgin Mary to the God from her very childhood, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, who filled her with grace at the time of her Immaculate Conception. Tradition says that Mary's parents Joachim and Anne were without child for a long time. They received heavenly message that they would bear a child in the near future. They made a vow to gift the child to the Temple of God and they fulfilled their vow by presenting Mary in the God's Temple at the age of three. Mary remained in the church till her puberty and served there. This feast was celebrated throughout the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), in South Italy and in the Papal Chapel in Avignon in 1372 by pope Gregory-XI. But this feast was suppressed by pope Pius-V in the year 1568 but again re-introduced by pope Sixtus-V in the year 1585.

Mother Mary became a greater temple than any one built by human beings by their hands and God came down to dwell in her and sanctified her. She played a major and unique role in God's plan of human salvation and she became a mother without knowing man.
