- St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Stephen was from a very noble family and was born in the year 997 to father Prince Geza and mother Sarolt of Hungary. He married Giselle, the daughter of Duke Henry-Ii of Bavaria. He took very sincere efforts to spread Christianity and extended patronage to Church leaders. St. Stephen was anointed as king of Hungary by Pope Sylvester-II on the Christmas day in the year 1001, with the consent of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto-III. St. Stephen dedicated his crown to Holy Mary, during the coronation. His only son Emeric died after being wounded in a hunting expedition in the year 1031. Therefore St. Stephen was having no son left to rule his Kingdom. So in his death bed he raised the Holy Crown by his right hand and prayed to the Holy Mary to take the Hungarians as Her subjects and to become the Queen of Hungarians. He died on August 15, 1038, on the commemoration day of the Assumption of Mary.
St. Stephen's right hand is kept as a relic and is called as the "Holy Right" by Hungarians. His right hand remains uncorrupted due to the reason that with this hand he raised the Holy Crown towards heaven and prayed to the Virgin Mary. The right hand is now in the Basilica of King Saint Stephen in Budapest.
He is venerated as the patron saint of masons, stone cutters and brick layers. He was canonized by Pope Gregory-VII on August 20, 1083.

Please log in to like, share and comment! - Assumption of Mary
Tradition:
- After Jesus' ascension, Mary lived with the Apostles until her death. Following her passing, she was buried by the Apostles. Tradition holds that the Apostle St. Thomas, who arrived after her death, was eager to see her one last time. Upon opening her tomb, the Apostles discovered it empty, leading to the belief that God had assumed Mary into heaven, body and soul, without her body decaying.
Significance:
- Mary as a Pathway: Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, is considered a pathway to heaven. Just as Jesus entered the world through Mary, believers view her as a guide and intercessor on their journey to eternal life.
Feast and Celebration:
- The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th, honors Mary's assumption into heaven. This feast reflects on her role in salvation history and seeks her intercession.
Spiritual Symbolism:
- Ladder to Heaven: Mary is often depicted as a "ladder" through which believers ascend to heaven, symbolizing her role in bringing Jesus into the world and her ongoing guidance for the faithful.
This belief underscores Mary's unique place in Christian devotion, highlighting her role in the divine plan of salvation and her continued spiritual presence as a mother to all Christians.

St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894 in Poland, to father Julius Kolbe and mother Maria Dabrowska. He joined the Franciscans in 1907 and ordained as a priest in 1918. He founded a movement devoted to Our Lady and spread this movement through a magazine named "The Knight of the Immaculate". He was arrested by Nazis on February 17, 1941 and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. He was singing hymns to the Virgin Mary in the concentration camp without any fear. He was tortured in the Nazi concentration camp without giving any food, water and other facilities for more than two weeks. When another person was due to be killed on a particular day, that man started crying" my wife, my children". Then Maximilian volunteered to take the place of that man to die, to save that poor man. He was killed by giving carbolic acid injection. He died on August 14, 1941.
A cure from intestinal tuberculosis to one Angela Testoni in July, 1948 and also a cure from calcification on the arteries/sclerosis were attributed to the intervention of St. Maximilian.
He was beatified in 1971 by Pope Paul-VI and canonized by Pope John Paul-II on October 10, 1982. He was declared as a martyr and is venerated as a patron saint of drug addicts and political prisoners.

- St. Clare
She was born on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy. Her father was Favorino Scifi, the Count of Sasso and mother Orto Lana. Since her parents were of noble family, they wanted take St. Clare to their home, when she became a nun against their will. She refused to return to home and told her parents that God has called for her service. She was one of the first followers of St. Francis of Assisi. She founded an Order of Nuns named Order of Poor Ladies. The Order was renamed as Order of Saint Clare and also called as Poor Clares after the death of St. Clare, by Pope Urban-IV in the year 1263. One day some enemy soldiers came to raid the convent, where St. Clare was residing. St. Clare placed the Blessed Sacrament before the soldiers and she kneeled down to pray. Suddenly the enemy soldiers fled from the convent, due to some sudden fright struck the soldiers. The prayer of St. Clare and her faith in the Blessed Sacrament saved the nuns of the convent on that day. She died on August 11, 1253. She was canonized by Pope Alexander-IV on August 15, 1255, as St. Clare of Assisi. She is considered as the patron of sore eyes. Pope Pius-XII designated her as the patron saint of television in the year 1958.

He was born in A.D. 225 in a place now in modern day Spain. He was one of the seven Deacons of ancient Rome under Pope Sixtus-II. He gave all the money he had to the poor people. When the Pope Sixtus-II was condemned to death by the Emperor Valerian and when the Pope was led to execution, St. Lawrence followed the Pope. He asked the Pope "Father, where are you going without your deacon". To this the Pope answered him that "in three days you will follow me". After the death of the Pope Sixtus-II, the Prefect of Rome, who was a greedy pagan, ordered Lawrence to bring all the Church's treasures to him. Lawrence asked for three days to bring the treasures to him. He then gathered all the poor and sick people in Rome and brought them before the Prefect and told him they are the treasures of the Church. The Perfect became furious and condemned Lawrence to a slow and cruel death. He was tied on top of an iron grill over a slow fire. This roasted the flesh of Lawrence little by little and led him to a slow and very painful death. Tradition says that he was martyred at San Lorenzo in Panisperna on August 10, 258. Legend says that St Lawrence, while he was roasted on the iron grill told the soldiers that his flesh is now suitably roasted so that it can be eaten by them. Emperor Constantine constructed an Oratory in honor of St. Lawrence. The grill of iron of martyrdom was placed by Pope Pascal-II in the Church of St. Lorenzo in Lucina.
He is one of the widely venerated saints of Catholic Church. The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs every year in mid-August on or near San Lawrence feast day, is called by many people as the "Tears of Saint Lawrence".

In the year 1533 he founded a house in Naples to fight against Lutheranism and to check its spreading. When he fell ill, he slept on a wooden board. When the doctors told him to take rest on a comfortable bed, he refused and said that his savior died on a cross and at least let him die on wood. He died on August 7, 1547.
He was beatified by Pope Urban-VIII on October 8, 1629 and also canonized on April 12, 1671. He is the patron saint of workers, job seekers and un-employed people.

The event you are referring to is called the Transfiguration of Jesus, and it is one of the key moments in the New Testament that reveals Jesusâ divine nature. Here's a more detailed explanation:
Jesus took three of His closest disciplesâPeter, James, and Johnâup a high mountain, Mount Tabor. There, something extraordinary happened: Jesusâ appearance changed. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as light. This transformation showed the disciples that Jesus was not just a great teacher or prophet but that He was truly divine, the Son of God.
During this event, two important figures from Jewish history, Moses and Elijah, appeared and spoke with Jesus. Moses represented the Law (the first five books of the Bible), and Elijah represented the Prophets. Their presence signified that Jesus was the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. They discussed Jesus' coming suffering, His death in Jerusalem, which was part of Godâs plan for salvation.
Peter, amazed by what was happening, suggested building three tents for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. This showed how Peter wanted to stay in that glorious moment, but he didnât fully understand the significance of what he was witnessing.
As Peter was speaking, a cloud came down and covered them all. From the cloud, the voice of God spoke, declaring, "This is my beloved Son; listen to Him." This confirmed to the disciples that Jesus was not just a human teacher but Godâs own Son. After the voice, the cloud lifted, and only Jesus was left, showing that He alone was to be their focus.
This event was important for several reasons:
1. **Jesusâ divine nature**: It confirmed that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine.
2. **Godâs plan**: Moses and Elijah spoke about Jesus' suffering and death, showing that it was all part of God's salvation plan for humanity.
3. **Godâs confirmation**: Godâs voice from the cloud affirmed Jesus as His beloved Son and emphasized that people must listen to Him.
As for the appearance of Moses and Elijah, many see this as a sign that life exists after death. Both of them had died long before, yet they appeared alive and spoke with Jesus. This points to the Christian belief in eternal life for those who follow Jesus' teachings, that after death, believers will continue to live in the presence of God.
This event is remembered in Christian tradition as a powerful manifestation of Jesus' true identity and the promise of life beyond death for those who are faithful to Him.

He was born on October 23, 1491 at the castle in Loyola in the municipality of Azpeitia, now in Spain. His baptismal name was Inigo Lopez de Loyola. He was brought up by the wife of a local blacksmith since his mother died soon after his birth. He became a servant (Page) in the house of the Treasurer of the Kingdom of Castle, who was a relative to him. In 1509 he joined the army of Viceroy of Navarre and participated in many battles without incurring any injuries to him. But one day he was injured seriously in his legs by a cannonball in a battle on May 20, 1521. During the treatment period he read De Vita Christi, a commentary on the life of Jesus and commentary on the Gospels. After reading this book, he started reading other books about Jesus and other saints. He got a mind change after reading Christian books and decided to devote his life to work for the conversion of non-Christians to Christian faith, in the Holy Land. After recovery from the leg injuries, he went to the Benedictine monastery, Santa Maria de Montserrat on March 25, 1523 and hung his military vestments before the image of the Holy Virgin Mary and went away. He then spent the next few months in a cave and practiced rigorous asceticism. He made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for about 20 days and he studied in the University of Paris. In Paris he gathered six of his friends namely Francis Xavier, Alfonso Salmeron, Diego Laynez, Nicholas Bobadilla (all Spanish), Peter Faber (French) and Simao Rodriques (Portugal) and they took solemn vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, on August 15, 1534 and about their life long work, in the crypt of the church of Our Lady of Martyrs at, Montmartre, Loyola. They founded the Society of Jesus in 1539. He wrote the constitution of the Society of Jesus and was approved by pope Paul-III on September 27, 1540. St. Ignatius and his friends pronounced their vows in the newly found Order (The Society of Jesus) on April 22, 1541 at the church of St. Paul outside the Walls. St. Ignatius became the first Superior General (Father-General) of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuit motto is \'Ad Maiorem Dei glorium\' (for the greater glory of God).
St. Ignatius of Loyola died on July 31, 1556 in Rome due to malarial fever. He was beatified on July 27, 1609 by pope Paul-V and canonized by pope Gregory-XV on March 12, 1622.St. Ignatius of Loyola He was born on October 23, 1491 at the castle in Loyola in the municipality of Azpeitia, now in Spain. He was beatified on July 27, 1609 by pope Paul-V and canonized by pope Gregory-XV on March 12, 1622.0 Comments 0 Shares 19 Views - St. Martha
St. Martha lived in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem with her brother Lazarus and Sister Mary. She was born of a noble family and her father was Syro (the duke of Syria) and her mother was Encharia. As inheritance from their parents Martha had her property at Bethany, Lazarus had the part of Jerusalem and Mary got the castle of Magdala. When Jesus and his disciples came to the house of Martha and Mary, she opened the door and prepared for serving food for Jesus and His disciples. When Mary sat at the foot of Jesus to hear his preaching and not helping Martha in the preparation of food, Martha complained to Jesus about Mary as she was not helping her. But Jesus said \'Mary has chosen what is better\'. Martha was one of the few persons who first realized and believed that Jesus was the Son of God and Messiah. When Lazarus died when Jesus was not in Bethany, Martha sent word about his death to Jesus. Jesus came to Bethany after four days and received by Martha. Jesus wept for the death of Lazarus and told that Lazarus would rise again to life. For this Martha said to Jesus \'I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day\'. Jesus replied \'I am the resurrection and the life\' and for this Martha replied \'Yes Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world\'. Jesus then resurrected Lazarus four days after death (John 11:25\-27). Legends say that Martha went to Tarascon, a place in the Southern France. There the people told her that there was a dragon called Tarasque in the forest between Arles and Avignon, which was a man\-eater and a constant threat to the population there. Martha went there and showed the cross to the dragon and sprinkled holy water on it. The dragon stood still like a sheep and Martha tied the dragon with her girdle and brought it to the city. But on seeing the dragon, the people rose against it and killed it with spears. The dragon did not respond to the attacks by the people but simply kept quiet.
St. Martha is the patroness of cooks, domestic servants, hotel keepers, house maids, house wives, laundry workers, servants, servers, single laywomen and also travelers.

Joachim and Anne
By tradition Joachim and Anne were the parents of Holy Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Even though they were not mentioned in the New Testament, their story is mentioned in a document called Gospel of James. Tradition also says that Joachim and Anne were childless for a long time and were praying God to give them a child. They were very rich and they used to help the poor and also gave support to the Temple. But sometimes the priests refused to receive the help of Joachim and Anne, because of their childlessness since having no child was considered as a curse of God at those times. They first lived in Galilee and then moved to Jerusalem. One day an angel appeared to them and said they would have a child soon. Anne vowed at that time to dedicate her child to the God. Joachim and Anne brought up their child Mary to be a worthy mother of God. Mary must also have followed the example of her parents in rearing her Son Jesus. God had selected Joachim and Anne as the parents of the mother of His own begotten son itself shows that they are very saintly before God and God loved them very much. St. Joachim and St. Anne are also a part of the God's plan of salvation of mankind from sins.
St. Anne is the patron saint of Christian mothers and women in labor.

St. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in all the New Testament Gospels and she is also called Mary of Magdala. She was a very close disciple of Jesus and she was present at the foot of the cross on which Jesus was crucified as mentioned in the Gospels of Matthew 27:56, Mark 15:40 and John 19:23. She was also present when the holy body of Jesus was buried in the tomb by Joseph of Aramathea as per Matthew 27:61 and also Mark 15:47. She also went to the tomb of Jesus (also with others) on the early morning of the third day of Jesus' death and found the tomb empty. In the tomb it was informed to her by \'two men in clothes that gleaned like lightening\' that Jesus has resurrected. She immediately ran away and informed St. Peter and St. John about the resurrection of Jesus. They did not believe her but ran toward the tomb of Jesus and found the tomb empty and left the tomb in confusion. It seems Mary Magdalene also followed the two apostles but reached the tomb later after the two apostles left the tomb. On reaching the tomb she started weeping. Jesus, standing behind her and asked \'Woman why are you crying, who are you looking?\' She, thinking that the person must be the gardener, requested him to return the body of Jesus, if he had taken it from there. Then Jesus said \'Mary\'. She turned and said to him \'Rabbouni\'. Jesus gave the rare privilege of appearing first to Mary Magdalene only, after His resurrection (John 20:11\-18). She got this privilege of meeting the resurrected Jesus because she waited at the tomb for some long time to know about Jesus, unlike the two apostles who left the tomb quickly with confusion. Some historians say that after 14 years of the death of Jesus, the Jews put Mary Magdalene and some other Christians in a boat without any sails or oars. They drifted out to the sea and reached the shores of Southern France. Mary Magdalene spent the rest of her life there in a cave known as Sainte\-Baume. She was given the holy Eucharist daily by the angels and that was her only food. Legend says that she was transported miraculously to the chapel of St. Maximin just before her death and there she received her last sacraments. Pope Benedict\-XVI spoke about Mary Magdalene in his address before the Angelus, referring her as \'a disciple of the Lord who plays a lead role in the Gospel\'.

- Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The title "Our Lady of Mount Carmel" is given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as the patroness of the Carmelite Order. The feast is also known as the "Scapular Feast" because of its association with the brown scapular, a symbol worn by members of the Carmelite Order. According to tradition, the Holy Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a Prior General of the Carmelites, on July 16, 1251, and gave him the brown scapular. This event became a significant part of Carmelite spirituality, as the scapular symbolizes Mary's special protection over those who wear it.
The brown scapular is considered a form of Mary's own garment, and it offers both spiritual grace and protection. Carmelites believe that the Virgin Mary serves as a model of virtue and contemplative prayer. The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was first celebrated by the Carmelite Order between 1376 and 1386 to commemorate their victory over adversaries and the official approval of their name and constitution by Pope Honorius III in 1226.
The Carmelite Order traces its origins back to the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha, who are believed to have lived on Mount Carmel, located in present-day Israel. This connection to Mount Carmel reflects the deep Carmelite tradition of prayer and contemplation.
One notable event associated with this title occurred on October 13, 1917, during the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. The visionaries at Fatima reported seeing Our Lady of Mount Carmel during this miraculous event, further cementing her importance in the Church.
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was eventually extended to the entire Latin Church by Pope Benedict XIII on September 24, 1726. This celebration honors Mary's guidance and protection, especially for the Carmelite community and all those who wear the scapular in devotion to her.Our Lady of Mount Carmel The title "Our Lady of Mount Carmel" is given to the Blessed Virgin Mary in her role as the patroness of the Carmelite Order. - St. Benedict
He was born around the year 480 A.D. in a distinguished family of a Roman noble, in Umbria, Italy. He was a twin with his sister St. Scholastica. He studied in Rome and wanted to live a secluded life away from the busy city life, to avoid watching marching armies, sufferings of people. He left Rome with his aged nurse and settled down at Enfide, near the church of St. Peter. Later he met a monk Romanus of Subiaco, whose monastery was in the mountains. Romanus gave St. Benedict the habit of a monk. Benedict lived a life of a hermit for three years in a cave in the mountain. He became a very respectable monk and people used to gather around him for spiritual guidance. When the abbot of a nearby monastery died, the monks came to St. Benedict and requested him to take over the abbot of the monastery and Benedict gave consent reluctantly and became the abbot knowing well that the manners of the monks are different from his views. Benedict made many reforms in the monastery and introduced many reforms for the monks. The monks did not agree with the reforms of St. Benedict and tried to kill him by poisoning. Once the monks added poison in the drink given for St. Benedict but when St. Benedict prayed before drinking, the cup shattered. In another occasion the monks gave poisoned bread to him but when St. Benedict prayed before eating the bread, a bird called raven suddenly came in and took away the poisoned bread and miraculously saved the life of St. Benedict. Disgusted about the behavior of the monks, St. Benedict returned to his cave for hermit life and attracted by his sanctity many people came to him again for solace. He founded 12 monasteries in the vicinity of Subiaco and later founded the famous Benedictine Monastery of Monte Cassino, on the hill top between Rome and Naples. He died at the Monte Cassino Monastery due to high fever, on March 21, 547. He wrote the \'Rule of Benedict\' with 73 chapters about how to live a Christ-centric spiritual life and about how to run a monastery efficiently. He contributed more to the rise of monasticism and his rules are the fundamental document for many religious communities even today.

St. Augine was a native of China and was born in the year 1746. He worked as a soldier in the beginning and served as one of the soldiers who escorted Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse of the Paris Foreign Mission Society to his execution in Beijing. Augine, on seeing the heroism and courage exhibited by the bishop before and at the time of his death for the cause of the Christian faith, got change of mind and wished to convert to Christianity. He became a Christian by getting baptism at the age of 30 years. He then studied for priesthood and ordained a priest after 5 years. During the reign of Chinese Emperor Kia\-Kin (1796\-1821), Christian missionaries whether foreign or native Chinese were killed indiscriminately, simply for following Christian faith. Augine Zhao Rong was caught and was asked to renounce his Christian faith. But he refused to renounce Christianity and he was executed on September 14, 1815.
Another noted native martyr in the group was a 14\-year old Chinese girl named Ann Wang, who bravely faced torture and death for the cause of her Christian Faith. Just before she was beheaded, she declared \'The door of heaven is opened to all\' and shouted the name of Jesus three times.
Yet another Chinese born martyr was an 18\-year old boy named Chi Zhuzi, who was then preparing to receive baptism. He was captured by the authorities on the road and was asked to worship their native gods but he refused and also bravely revealed that he was a Christian. His right arm was cut off immediately but still he did not deny his faith in Christianity. Before execution, he fearlessly pronounced \'Every piece of my flesh, every drop of my blood will tell you that I am a Christian\'.
St. Augine Zhao Rong and Companions were canonized by Pope John Paul\-II on October 1, 2000 along with 120 Chinese Martyrs.

St. Thomas was one of the apostles of Jesus and he was also called \'Doubting Thomas\'. Even though St. Thomas entertained doubt about any miracle that happened without his presence, he was a very staunch believer of Christ. One day when Jesus was preparing to go to Judea to see the ailing Lazarus and other apostles advised Jesus not to go to Judea as the Jews may again stone Jesus, St. Thomas only said \'Let us go, that we may die with him\' (John11:16). St. Thomas is said to be the only witness to the Assumption of Holy Virgin Mary into heaven. When the Holy Mary died, St. Thomas was held up elsewhere in missionary work but after her burial St. Thomas was taken to her tomb, where he witnessed her bodily assumption into heaven and she dropped her Girdle to St. Thomas. Other apostles did not believe the bodily assumption of Holy Mary into heaven as told by St. Thomas until they saw the empty tomb and the girdle of Virgin Mary. Tradition says St. Thomas landed at the ancient port of Muzris, in Kodungalloor, in the Malabar Coast in India, at about 52 A.D. with the main intention of preaching the gospel to the Jews who lived there. When Jesus said during the discourse in the Last Supper that He was going to prepare a place for them (apostles), St. Thomas raised a doubt \'Lord, we know not where you go, and how can we know the way?\'. Jesus then declared \'I am the way, truth and life\' (John 14:1\-6). Only due to the doubt raised by St. Thomas, Jesus declared to the mankind that He is the only way to go to heaven for any one. When other apostles announced the resurrection of Jesus, St. Thomas said \'Except I shall see in His hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the place of the nails and put my hand into His side, I will not believe\' (John 20:25). But when Jesus appeared after eight days and gently rebuked St. Tomas for his disbelief, Thomas Knelt down and said \'My Lord, My God\'. St. Tomas was also one of the seven apostles who were fishing on the Sea of Galilee, when Jesus appeared to them. St. Thomas was killed by piercing his body with a spear on December 21, 72 near Chennai, Tamil Nadu India.

The first martyrs of Christianity were those who were persecuted in Rome during Emperor Nero's reign on August 15, 64 A.D., following a devastating fire that ravaged the city. This fire destroyed about half of Rome, leading many to suspect that Emperor Nero himself was responsible. Rumors circulated that he wanted to expand his palace and, in pursuit of this goal, had orchestrated the fire. To deflect public outrage away from himself, Nero scapegoated the Christians, a group already facing societal disdain.
Roman historian Tacitus provides harrowing accounts of the brutal tortures inflicted on these early Christians. Some were coated in tar, tied to poles, and set ablaze to illuminate the streets for Neroâs chariot. Others were burned alive to provide light during the evening festivities of Roman officials. Some Christians were sewn into animal skins and fed to wild dogs while still alive, while others faced crucifixion or were thrown to lions in the Roman arena. These horrific acts reflected the extent of suffering endured by the early Christians for their faith.
Despite the cruelty they faced, the resolve of these martyrs to die rather than renounce their beliefs inspired others to explore and embrace Christianity. Their willingness to suffer for their faith served as a powerful testament to the virtues of Christianity, leading to rapid growth in the movement. The phrase "the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church" captures this profound truth, illustrating how the sacrifices of these early believers laid the foundation for the faiths expansion and resilience in the face of persecution.

Peter and Paul
Sts. Peter and Paul are regarded as foundational figures in the early Christian Church, each playing a critical role in the establishment and spread of Christianity. St. Peter is recognized as the leader of the apostles and the early Church. Jesus chose him to lead His Church on Earth, famously stating that He would give him the "keys of the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 16:13-19). This metaphorical act symbolized Peter's authority within the Church. Jesus also appointed Peter as the shepherd, charging him to "feed My sheep" (John 21:15-17), highlighting his pastoral responsibilities.
Born as Simon, son of Jonah, in Bethsaida near Lake Genesar, Peter was originally a fisherman. He was called to follow Jesus alongside his brother, St. Andrew. Peter was part of Jesus' inner circle, witnessing significant events such as the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. He demonstrated his loyalty by drawing his sword to defend Jesus when Judas Iscariot betrayed Him.
After the resurrection, Peter emerged as a leader among the apostles. At Pentecost, filled with the Holy Spirit, he delivered a powerful sermon that led to the conversion of about 3,000 people from various nations, speaking to them in their own languages. People believed that even Peter's shadow could heal the sick, demonstrating the extraordinary power associated with him. Peter was martyred around 64 A.D. during Emperor Nero's persecution of Christians. He was crucified upside down, feeling unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. His burial site is believed to be beneath St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
St. Paul, originally named Saul, was born in Tarsus, Cilicia, to a Roman citizen. He was educated under the Jewish rabbi Gamaliel and was a fervent Pharisee, actively persecuting Christians. Saul did not meet Jesus during His earthly ministry but had a profound conversion experience on his way to Damascus to arrest Christians. A bright light surrounded him, and he fell to the ground, hearing Jesus call him by name (Acts 9:1-16). After regaining consciousness, he was blind until Ananias, sent by God, restored his sight, marking the beginning of his transformation into a passionate apostle of Christ.
Paul became a key figure in spreading the Gospel to the Gentiles. He participated in the First Council of Jerusalem, which addressed the question of whether Gentile converts needed to follow Jewish laws, ultimately deciding they did not need to be circumcised. St. Paul wrote numerous letters (epistles) to various churches, many of which are included in the New Testament. His writings are crucial for understanding Christian theology and ethics.
St. Paul was also martyred during Nero's persecution, likely around 67 A.D. Some accounts suggest he was beheaded, and his martyrdom is traditionally commemorated on June 29, the same date as St. Peter's feast day, reflecting their joint significance in the Church. Together, Sts. Peter and Paul are often depicted as the pillars of the Church, symbolizing the unity of leadership and mission within early Christianity. Their contributions, teachings, and martyrdom significantly shaped the development of Christian doctrine and the global spread of the faith. In the Roman Catholic Church, the birthdays of only three individuals are celebrated: Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and St. John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist holds a significant role in God's plan for salvation as the forerunner and precursor to Jesus Christ. His primary mission, as outlined in the Gospel of Luke (1:17), was to prepare the hearts of the people for the coming of the Lord.
Role and Prophecy
Jesus referred to John the Baptist as the expected prophet Elijah, as foretold in Malachi 4:5-6. In Matthew 17:11-13, Jesus confirms this connection, stating that Elijah has already come and was not recognized, paralleling how He would also face suffering at the hands of others. This highlights John's crucial role in the redemptive narrative.
Birth and Early Life
The birth of John the Baptist was prophesied by the Archangel Gabriel to Zechariah, John's father, while he was performing priestly duties in the Temple of Jerusalem. Zechariah, a priest of the division of Abijah, was married to Elizabeth, a descendant of Aaron. Both were advanced in age and childless. When Gabriel announced that they would have a son, Zechariah expressed doubt about the prophecy due to their old age. In response, Gabriel rendered him mute until John's birth, as a sign of divine authority.
Upon John's birth, Zechariah regained his speech when he named his son John, in accordance with the angelâs instructions. This confirmed John's identity as a significant prophetic figure, being a descendant of Aaron through both parents.
Ministry and Baptism
John the Baptist's ministry involved calling people to repentance and baptizing them as a sign of their commitment to God. He recognized Jesus as the Messiah when he witnessed the Holy Spirit descending upon Him like a dove at Jesus' baptism. This event was significant as it involved the entire Holy Trinity: God the Son (Jesus) was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended, and God the Father spoke from heaven, proclaiming Jesus as His beloved Son.
Martyrdom
John's boldness in proclaiming the truth led him to confront Herod Antipas about his unlawful marriage to Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. Herodias, incensed by Johnâs condemnation of their marriage, conspired with her daughter Salome to have John executed. During a banquet, Salome danced for Herod, who, impressed and swayed by the entertainment, promised to grant her any wish. Influenced by her mother, Salome requested the beheading of John the Baptist. Reluctantly, Herod ordered John's execution, and he was beheaded in prison, with the date of martyrdom traditionally marked as August 29, around 28 A.D.
Legacy and Historical Context
The aftermath of John's execution led to conflict for Herod Antipas. King Aretas of Damascus sought revenge for his daughterâs dishonor, ultimately defeating Herod's forces in battle. The Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, in his work *Jewish Antiquities*, linked Herod's military defeat to divine punishment for the execution of John the Baptist. John was buried in a location believed to be where the Umayyad Mosque (the Great Mosque of Damascus) now stands, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in the New Testament narrative and Christian faith.

St. Anthony was born on August 15, 1195 at Lisbon in an aristocratic and wealthy family and his birth name was Fernando Martins de Bulhoes. His father was Vincente Martins de Bulhoes and mother Teresa Pais Taveira. Anthony's father was the descendant of the famous Godfrey de Bouillin, the commander of the First Crusade (1095\\-1101) and his mother was the descendant of Froila\\-I, the fourth king of Asturia. He first entered into the community of Canons Regular at the Abbey of St. Vincent in Lisbon. At that time some five friars of the Franciscan Order were martyred in Morocco on January 16, 1220. On hearing the news of the martyrdom of the Franciscan Friars, Anthony wanted to join the Franciscan Order to become a martyr for Christ. Anthony joined the small hermitage in Olives and adopted the name Anthony, in the name of the church there dedicated to St. Anthony the Great. He set out for Morocco for missionary work but could not go there due to sickness but instead went to Italy. On one ordination occasion, the head of the hermitage where St. Anthony was staying called Anthony to give the sermon, as the Dominican friars were unprepared for it and the head of the hermitage could not find any suitable person from the Franciscan order to give sermon on that day. Anthony's rich voice and the entire theme and substance of his sermon and his eloquence attracted everyone present there. After this incident Anthony was commissioned to preach Gospel throughout Lombardy in Northern Italy.
Many miracles happened at the hands of Anthony when he was alive.
One day a horse which was fasting for three days, even refused to take oats placed before it, till it had knelt down and adored the Blessed Sacrament held by St. Anthony in his hands. This miracle happened in a place called Rimini.
In another occasion some Italian heretics gave poisoned food to St. Anthony. But St. Anthony made the poisoned food eatable by the sign of the cross.
He once preached to the fishes by standing on the bank of river Brenta near Padua.
Once when St. Anthony was on his way to Italy, he stayed in the castle of Chateauneuf\\-la\\-Foret in the province of Limousine. In that palace Infant Jesus appeared to St. Anthony and came down and stood on the Bible held by St. Anthony. On the basis of this apparition only, St. Anthony of Padua is depicted in art holding a bible on which the Infant Jesus stands.
In yet another occasion St. Anthony and his companions stayed in the house of a poor woman during a journey and she gave bread and wine to St. Anthony and others. But she forgot to close the tap of the wine\\-barrel and the wine was wasted. In that time one of Anthony's companions broke the glass tumbler by inadvertence. St. Anthony started to pray and suddenly the broken glass tumbler was made whole and the wine\\-barrel filled anew with wine.
St. Anthony died on June 13, 1231 when he was just 36 years old. St. Anthony was canonized by pope Gregory\\-IX on May 30, 1232 within one year of his death. He was also proclaimed Doctor of the Church by pope Pius\\-XII on January 16, 1946. His body was exhumed many years after his death and it was found that his tongue was found incorrupt.St. Anthony of Padua St. Anthony was born on August 15, 1195 at Lisbon in an aristocratic and wealthy family and his birth name was Fernando Martins de Bulhoes.
