Good evening, brethren.
1. Our evening prayer focuses on "Seeking shelter in the night."
2. Do you k ow the ki ds of opposition to Jesus?
3. Do you know about difficult faithfulness?
4. Do you make God's will your will?
To know more, read the message below.
1. Evening Prayer
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. ⏤ Psalm 121:4
Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered or expressed. ⏤ James Montgomery
O Lord, we humbly beseech You to accept this, our evening sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Mercifully grant to us, through the merits of Jesus Christ, Your Son, the remission of our sins, and all the blessings of eternal life. Fill our hearts, we ask You, with Your Spirit. Simply to Your cross we cling, O Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer.
The night is now before us. We do not know what perils are veiled in the darkness. We know only that we are safe in You, by night as by day, for the darkness and the light are both alike to You. Your eye sees in the night as clearly as at noonday. So, while we sleep, You will watch over us, and we shall be as safe as if it were day. Be our shelter, our keeper, protecting us from all danger.
We may not all live through the night. If any of us shall end our life here and go away before the morning, may it be unto You that we shall go. We ask that You will shed abroad Your love in our hearts. May Your will be done here in our home as it is done in Heaven. We ask for special individual blessings. We have different needs. Some of us are strong, and others are weak. As our day is, so may our strength be. Let none of us ever be overwhelmed by this world's evil.
We ask for refreshing rest in sleep. May nothing disturb our repose until the morning. Give us in sleep the blessings of Your love. May we be stronger for the night's rest. Fit us for whatever is before us. Watch over us and bring us to the morning light in peace and health. Guide us in safe and good paths, and help us to be useful to many others. We ask it in the blessed name of Jesus. Amen.

2. Two Kinds of Opposition to Jesus.
When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. (Matthew 2:3)
Jesus is troubling to people who do not want to worship him, and he arouses opposition against those who do. This is probably not a main point in the mind of Matthew, but it is an inescapable implication as the story goes on.
In this story, there are two kinds of people who do not want to worship Jesus.
The first kind is the people who simply do nothing about Jesus. He is a nonentity in their lives. This group is represented at the beginning of Jesus’s life by the chief priests and scribes. Matthew 2:4 says, “Assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, [Herod] inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.” So they told him, and that was that: back to business as usual. The sheer silence and inactivity of the leaders is overwhelming in view of the magnitude of what was happening.
And notice, Matthew 2:3 says, “When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” In other words, the rumor was going around that someone thought the Messiah was born. The inactivity on the part of the chief priests is staggering: why not go with the magi? They are not interested. They are not passionate about finding the Son of God and worshiping him.
The second kind of people who do not want to worship Jesus is the kind who are deeply threatened by him. That’s Herod in this story. He is really afraid. So much so that he schemes and lies and then commits mass murder just to get rid of Jesus.
So today, these two kinds of opposition will come against Christ and his worshipers: indifference and hostility. I surely hope that you are not in one of those groups.
And if you are a Christian, let this Christmas be the time when you ponder what it means — what it costs — to worship and follow this Messiah.

Make God’s Will Our Will
The mystery of man’s free will is far too great for us! God said to Adam and Eve, “Thou shalt not eat from this tree.” Here was a divine requirement calling for obedience on the part of those who had the power of choice and will. When they disobeyed they usurped the right that was not theirs! The poet Tennyson must have thought about this, for he wrote in his In Memoriam, “Our wills are ours, we know not how; our wills are ours to make them Thine! We know not how.” Then Tennyson girds himself and continues, “Yes, our wills are ours to make them Thine.” As created beings, that is our only right—to make our wills the will of God, to make the will of God our will! God is sovereign, and we are the creatures. He is the Creator and therefore His is the right to command us with the obligation that we should obey. It is a happy obligation, I might say, for “His yoke is easy and His burden is light!” It is important to agree that true salvation restores the right of a Creator-creature relationship, acknowledging God’s right to our fellowship and communion!
Verse
And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Acts 9:6
Thought
As created beings, that is our only right—to make our wills the will of God, to make the will of God our will!
Prayer
Lord, there is no other power on earth that can match the force of Your will. My will is indeed under Thine, as it ever was even when I thought it was not so. It is indeed a happy obligation. Thank You for Your oversight.
