Good morning, brethren.
1. Our morning prayer focuses on "Groth in Grace."
2. How do you keep yourself from idols?
3. Do you know that He is with us in our loneliness?
4. Do you know what is in a gift?
To know more, read the message below.
1. Morning Prayer
But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and forever. Amen. ⏤ 2 Peter 3:18
There is always more grace to grow into. ⏤ Timothy Keller
Shed upon us this morning the light of Your love, and give us strength and grace. As we leave the night behind us, so may we leave the sins and shadows of our lives behind us, and go forth in newness of spirit. We desire that all our days shall be steps toward holier things. We would not live any two of them on the same level. We would grow in grace. As each day passed through brings us nearer to eternity—we would have each one bring us nearer to the full beauty of the likeness of Jesus. We would have each day lift our feet one step higher in the ladder of life which reaches at last to Your feet in the heavenly glory!
So our prayer is that this day may be for us a day of growth in all godliness—in whatever things are true, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely. While we do our common tasks, may we be growing stronger in all the qualities of true life. May our association as a family enrich our lives in all the graces of true character and make us more gentle, more thoughtful, more patient, more kindly, more unselfish. May even our temptations and our conflicts make us stronger, and bring out in us qualities of beauty which have not been developed in times of ease. Thus may the day be one of growth and progress for each of us.
We need Your help at every step. Unless You will be with us, nothing good can come out of our experiences. Forgive us our sins and our many failures and mistakes. Cleanse us from secret, hidden faults. Keep us from presumptuous sins. Let no iniquity obtain dominion over us. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. Amen.

```Key Verse:``` _*"Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen" (1 John 5:21).*_
Idols are man-made gods which sinners bow down to worship. They are worthless pieces of wood, iron or other things that have no power to save. In the book of Judges, we have the story of the encounter of the Ark of God with an idol named Dagon.
The Ark of God was a symbol of God's presence. When the Philistines captured the Ark, they ignorantly set it up in the temple of their idol. This idol fell and was broken into pieces before the Ark of God. This shows that idols are nothing and should never be worshipped.
There are many things today that can be categorized as *'idols'* that people, even those who claim to be Christians, worship. These things have created a gap between them and God. The Bible strongly warns children to keep themselves from idols.
Modern-day idols include fashions that corrupt the characters and lives of people who love it. There are so many fashion trends that show rebellion to God's word.
For example, some girls wear slacks or trousers, this is disobedience to Deuteronomy 22:5. Some pierce their ears and noses to fix rings and other things. Others dress half naked and wear tight-fitting dresses to show the shape of their bodies. All these are abominations to God.
Other things that constitute idols are bad games on the television, internet and social media, immoral films, and many other bad things that some children are involved in today. *You must get rid of all idols in your life if you want to enjoy God's favour and blessings.*
Henry David Thoreau described a city as a place where many people are “lonesome together.” Those words have the ring of truth. In my youth, songs like “Mr. Lonely,” “Only the Lonely,” and “Eleanor Rigby” focused on isolation and loneliness. In recent years, the pandemic was one of the most isolating seasons the world has known. And social media can feed that loneliness, giving us connection without relationship. Perhaps loneliness is the new pandemic.
As Matthew shared the story of the birth of Jesus (1:18-25), he told us, “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet Isaiah Smith: ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’) ” (vv. 22-23). Ponder that for a moment. God with us!
As believers in Jesus, we’re never alone. We’ve been born again into the family of Christ, a family that spans the globe and the ages. The apostle Paul said, “You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household” (Ephesians 2:19). We’re loved by the ever-present God, who said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
Whatever you’re facing today, your heavenly Father is present with you. Allow Him to help you as you step into life’s uncertainties and challenges. He’s with you.
By Bill Crowder
REFLECT & PRAY
When have you felt lonely? When experiencing this sense of isolation, how do you respond to it?
Thank You, Father, that because of Your abiding presence, I’m never alone.
SCRIPTURE INSIGHT
Jesus is Immanuel, which means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). John’s gospel describes His incarnation in this way: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). The concept that God is with His people can be seen throughout the Bible. It’s the theme of Psalm 46, where the repeated refrain is: “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (vv. 7, 11). The psalm concludes with this tender appeal to those facing loneliness or any other life challenge: “Be still, and know that I am God” (v. 10). Whatever we’re facing today, God is with us, and we’re never alone.
For unto us a child is born . . . and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
—Isaiah 9:6
To Christians the joy of Christmas is not limited to His birth. It is built even more on the triumph of His death and resurrection—that gave meaning to His birth. The mysterious spirit of generosity which possesses us at Christmas is the afterglow of Calvary. The fact of the cross illuminates this day and hallows it. As we exchange our gifts, let us remember that they are symbolic of the unspeakable gift of God’s love.
I do not believe that Christians should be giving expensive gifts to each other. We should quietly give simple little gifts that are expressions of our love and devotion to the recipients. These gifts become symbolic of the gift of God’s love. How much money could be saved and invested in the Kingdom of God by thousands of Christian families every year if the true meaning of Christmas was observed.
