Evening Prayer My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation [is] from him. ⏤ Psalm 62:5 Rest comes from trusting God’s hand to hold us close, no matter the day's trials. ⏤ Elizabeth George Father, we thank You for showing us the sweetness and gentleness of Your love. No mother's embrace is as warm and secure as Your arms are for Your children. No earthly home can provide the safety and comfort that we find in You. Tonight, as we gather in our home after the day's struggles, we also seek refuge in Your love. There is no safer place than with You. Please forgive the sins of this day. As we settle into the evening, grant us Your peace. Take whatever we have done today, and bless it. We tried to do good as we went about our day, even though our efforts were not always perfect. May You still use them to help and bless others. Teach us to be content with what we have, and save us from complaining about the difficulties we face. We are easily discouraged and often impatient when things don’t go as planned. Forgive us for our grumbling and help us to accept what comes our way with quietness, cheerfulness, and prayerfulness, so that Your name may be honored. Give us a sweet and calm spirit, free from all complaints. Fill our hearts with Your grace so that we may live for You. Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil. Daily Bible Study The Lord instructs us to keep our hearts pure with all diligence. It's from our heart that wickedness first springs to life, our desires and thoughts first begin there before they ever enter the world as our actions. Straying eyes, a deceitful mouth, envy, hatred, strife and perverse lips all have their origin and their direction from the inspirations of our hearts, because of the desires of our flesh. We have to remember it's not only our actions that God looks at, but the attitude, thoughts and motives behind those actions, which concern God. As Jesus told us in Matthew's Gospel, "But the things that come out of a person's mouth come from the heart, and these defile them." Our faith is a matter of the heart! In other words, where our heart is in regards to Jesus and who we say He is in our lives determines our faith. Given the fallen nature of man and the fallen world we live in, it requires all diligence to keep our hearts pure, to keep us focused on Christ. For most of us without the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we would be hopelessly lost in the desires of our heart. Therefore, we are to remain steadfast in our faith, trusting in God through Christ and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we lead our day to day lives. He always thinks about what we are going to be! The Savior who is our Lord cares absolutely nothing about your moral case history. He forgives it and starts from there as though you had been born one minute before. The woman of Samaria met our Lord at the well, and we ask, “Why was Jesus willing to reveal so much more about Himself in this setting than He did in other encounters during His ministry?” You and I would never have chosen this woman with such a shadow lying across her life, but Jesus is the Christ of God, and He could sense the potential within her innermost being. He gave her the secret of His Messiahship and the secret of the nature of God. Her frankness and her humility appealed to the Savior as they talked of man’s need and the true worship of God by the Spirit of God. In Jesus’ day, His critics said in scorn: “This man receives sinners!” They were right, and He lived and died and rose again to prove it. The blessed part is this: He is still receiving sinners! Verse Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Savior for to give repentance . . . and forgiveness of sins. Prayer Lord, thank You for receiving this sinner! Thank You for teaching me true worship by Your Holy Spirit. Let me not take it for granted; may my life will glorify daily.
