SITTING ON WHAT GOD WANTS YOU TO SURRENDER
A WORD FROM THE WORD:
"Now Rachel had taken the household idols, put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. And Laban searched all about the tent but did not find them. And she said to her father, 'Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is with me.' And he searched but did not find the household idols." Genesis 31:34-35 NKJV.
Rachel, while fleeing from her father's family with her necleus family to Jacob's homeland took along with her some worthless gods from her father's house, which were obviously unable to assuage or help her situation or that of her family while they lived in her father's house and Jacob, her husband, served Laban, her father.
But her emotional attachment, religious mindset and inclination to her father's household idols would not allow her jettison them, to the extent that she had to steal them, sat on them and lied about her cycle in order to save her life as the result of stealing the worthless idols.
Just like Rachel, it is interesting to see how people, even believing Christians, out of emotional attachment to family, friendship and institutions put heavy burden on their spiritual life and growth by hiding and sitting on worthless idols. Idols in this context are anything whatsoever that takes the pre-eminence of God in your life.
At this point, it's important for you to undertake a forensic inventory of your spiritual life and see if you're sitting on what God wants you to surrender, which is capable of stopping or delaying your walk with God.
What are you sitting on?
PRAYER BULLETS:
ABBA Father, thank You for bringing to my understanding the spiritual implications of Rachel's actions. I want to look inward and ensure that no rival throne survives in my heart, and I serve only You. Help me.
FURTHER READING:
Genesis 31:22-42; Psalm 115:4-8; 1 John 5:21; Habakkuk 2:18; 1 Corinthians 10:14.
