Moody O God, who commanded light to shine out of darkness, shine into our hearts this evening and fill us with Your peace. We thank You for all that this Sunday has brought us — for its quietness, its teaching, its worship, its fellowship with You and with Your people, and for the opportunities of serving You. We ask that You bless the rest and fellowship we have enjoyed in our home today. May our family life be enriched through the privileges of this day. Help us to make our home a place filled with the sweetness of Heaven. Bring us closer to You in our personal spiritual lives. May our thoughts of the risen Jesus lift our hearts into a deeper communion with Him. May He be more than ever our personal Friend, dearer to us than anyone else in the world. Is there not a cause? - 1 Samuel 17:29 The giant warrior Goliath stood and mocked the army, and the God, of Israel. While doubtless there were many that did not care one bit for this verbal abuse, none were willing to stand up to his savage bullying. That is, except for a young boy named David who answered with a clarion call of his own: is there not a cause? David against Goliath! The colossal mismatch is so striking that it has made it into the language and imagery even of secular literature. Yet what often is left out of the story is the one thing that gave David the strength and courage to stand against such insurmountable odds. What inspired David's courage? What drove him to march forward when everyone else cowered back? It was the realization that there was a cause greater than Israel, greater than Goliath, and greater than his own life. David's concern was for the glory of God. Are you willing to stand, like young David, in the face of terrifying assaults and debilitating peer pressure -- as perhaps the solitary and lonely figure on the scene who is concerned for the glory of God? Would that we had more daring Davids in our classrooms, offices, barracks, prison cells, homes, and even churches. In every generation there is a dearth of men and women who are committed, above all else, to the glory of God. Remove your way far from her, And do not go near the door of her house, Lest you give your honor to others, And your years to the cruel one; Lest aliens be filled with your wealth, And your labors go to the house of a foreigner. Daily Bible Study God's word gives us a stern warning regarding adultery and that is to follow the example of Joseph and flee far from it as fast as we can. Dear believer, remember there is no where we can go where God can't find us and no where we can hide where God can't see us. All sin, especially adultery is committed before the eyes of God and His holy angels. Since we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit this type of sin is especially destructive because it deals with our bodies which now, do not belong to us, but instead belong to God. Moreover, we are created in the image of God, thereby making this sin, especially destructive because it dishonors God's creation as well as His calling for both men and women. It's critical to understand sin of this nature cannot stay hidden, once committed it dishonors our souls and destroys our lives. And remember, once the sin of adultery has been committed, you bring to life a monster. A horrendous beast that want's nothing more than to come screaming and kicking into our world seeking our destruction in as public a matter as possible. Dear child of God, we must understand this point clearly. If this sin were not so severe, Satan and this dark fallen world we live in would not promote it so heavily in our culture and in our media. The hook is lust, the bait is the lie of secrecy and all who are caught by this will be prepared for the meal of destruction which will destroy your life and hurt the lives of those around you. That is why the apostle goes on to remind us that God has revealed these mysteries to us by the Holy Spirit. Oh, if we would only stop trying to make the Holy Spirit our servant and begin to live in His life as the fish lives in the sea, we would enter into the riches of glory about which we know nothing now. Too many of us want the Holy Spirit in order to have some gift—healing or tongues or preaching or prophecy. Yes, these have their place in that total pattern of the New Testament, but let us ever pray that we may be filled with the Spirit for a secondary purpose! Remember, God wants to fill you with His Spirit as an end in your moral life. God’s purpose is that we should know Him first of all, and be lost in Him; and that we should enter into the fullness of the Spirit that the eternal Son, Jesus Christ, may be glorified in us! Verse Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard… the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.1 Corinthians 2:9 Thought Let us ever pray that we may be filled with the Spirit for a secondary purpose!
