Stepping Forward With Courage and Obedience
Scripture
Joshua 1:9 (NKJV)
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Courage for the Next Step
Joshua chapter 1 opens with uncertainty and responsibility. Moses is gone. The leadership mantle has passed. The Promised Land lies ahead—but so do fortified cities, enemies, and unknown challenges. In this moment, God speaks directly to Joshua, not with strategy first, but with reassurance.
God gives Joshua three repeated commands: be strong, be courageous, and obey My Word. The strength Joshua needed was not physical confidence but spiritual trust. Courage was rooted in one unchanging truth—God’s presence. Just as God was with Moses, He promised to be with Joshua.
God also emphasized the importance of His Word. Success was not tied to military brilliance but to meditation and obedience to Scripture. Victory would come by aligning life and leadership with God’s truth.
For believers today, Joshua 1 reminds us that stepping into new seasons often feels intimidating. Transitions bring uncertainty. Responsibilities feel heavy. But God’s promise remains the same: He goes with us. Courage is not the absence of fear—it is obedience in spite of fear, anchored in God’s presence and Word.
Reflection Questions
1. What new responsibility or season is God calling me to step into
2. Am I relying on God’s presence or my own confidence
3. How central is God’s Word in guiding my decisions
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for Your promise to be with me wherever I go. When I feel unsure or afraid, help me to walk forward in strength and courage. Teach me to trust Your presence and obey Your Word as I step into what You have prepared. In Jesus name, Amen.
