BIBLE STUDY — January 22 | Exodus 31

“Equipped by the Spirit and Anchored by Rest”

Introduction

Exodus 31 brings the Tabernacle instructions to a close with two powerful reminders: God equips His people for His work, and He commands them to rest in His presence.

After chapters filled with detailed instructions on how to build His dwelling place, God now appoints specific men — Bezalel and Oholiab — to carry out the work. They are filled with the Spirit of God, equipped with wisdom, understanding, and skill to craft every holy item. This marks the first time in Scripture that someone is explicitly said to be “filled with the Spirit of God.”

Then, God reiterates the importance of the Sabbath — a holy day of rest. Even in the midst of divine
construction, God reminds His people that rest is sacred. The Tabernacle may represent His presence, but the Sabbath represents His peace.

Together, these two themes — Spirit-filled work and Spirit-led rest — form the foundation of a balanced
spiritual life. God not only calls us to serve Him with excellence but also commands us to trust Him through rest.

Context

● Author: Moses, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit

● Setting: Mount Sinai, during Moses’ forty days in God’s presence

● Purpose: To appoint Spirit-filled craftsmen for the Tabernacle and to reaffirm the holiness of Sabbath
rest as a sign of God’s covenant

Verse-by-Verse Overview

Verses 1–5 – Bezalel Filled with the Spirit of God

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.”

God personally calls Bezalel to oversee the building of the Tabernacle. More than skill, God gives him divine empowerment — wisdom, creativity, and understanding inspired by the Spirit.

Lesson: God equips whom He calls. When His Spirit fills you, ordinary skill becomes extraordinary purpose.

Verses 6–9 – Aholiab and the Artisans

“And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tabernacle of meeting, the ark of the Testimony and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furniture of the tabernacle—the table and its utensils, the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base.”

God calls not only Bezalel but also Aholiab and other gifted artisans. Their combined work fulfills the vision God gave to Moses.

Lesson: God’s work is accomplished through teamwork. Every gift matters, and every calling contributes to His greater plan.

Verses 10–11 – The Anointing Oil and Incense

“The garments of ministry, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests, and the anointing oil and sweet incense for the holy place; according to all that I have commanded you they shall do.”

God emphasizes obedience — everything must be made exactly as He instructed. Even the smallest detail carries spiritual significance.

Lesson: Obedience perfects our work. When we follow God’s pattern completely, our service becomes a
reflection of His holiness.

Verses 12–13 – The Sabbath: A Sign of the Covenant

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.’”

The Sabbath is a sign of God’s covenant — a sacred reminder that rest and holiness come from Him, not human effort.

Lesson: Rest is worship. Taking time to stop honors the truth that your worth and success depend on God, not endless work.

Verses 14–15 – Keeping the Sabbath Holy

“You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.”

God takes the Sabbath seriously — it’s not just rest but reverence. It teaches dependence and obedience in a culture driven by labor and production.

Lesson: God’s holiness deserves your time. When you prioritize His presence over productivity, He renews your soul and sanctifies your days.

Verses 16–17 – The Eternal Covenant of Rest

“Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.”
The Sabbath ties creation to covenant — just as God rested after creation, His people are to rest as a sign of faith and fellowship.

Lesson: Rest is divine design. When we align with God’s rhythm, we find refreshment and renewal that the world cannot give.

Verse 18 – The Tablets of Testimony

“And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the
Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.”

God Himself writes the commandments on stone, symbolizing their permanence and divine authority. This marks the completion of His revelation on Sinai.

Lesson: God’s Word is unchanging. What He writes stands forever — a foundation of truth and righteousness for every generation.

Application for Today

1. Serve in the Power of the Spirit: Let God fill you with wisdom and skill for whatever He’s called you to
do — spiritual or practical.

2. Work with Excellence: God values craftsmanship, creativity, and diligence done for His glory.

3. Rest in Faith: Sabbath is not laziness — it’s trust. Resting reminds you that God, not you, sustains
your life and success.

4. Honor the Balance: Ministry without rest leads to burnout; rest without obedience leads to stagnation.
God calls us to both.

5. Treasure His Word: What God wrote on tablets of stone, He now writes within you — live by it daily.

Summary

Exodus 31 beautifully unites Spirit-filled work with Spirit-led rest. God empowers Bezalel, Oholiab, and
others to build His Tabernacle with excellence — showing that every gift, when anointed by the Spirit, becomes sacred.

At the same time, God reminds Israel to rest. Even holy work must pause for worship. The Sabbath is a sign that God’s people are not saved by effort but by grace.

The chapter ends with God giving Moses the stone tablets — a divine signature of His covenant. Together, these truths show us that a healthy spiritual life is one that works diligently in God’s strength and rests deeply in His presence.

Reflection Questions

1. How does knowing that the Holy Spirit equips you change how you approach your daily work or
ministry?

2. What can you do to better honor the rhythm of work and rest in your spiritual life?

3. How does Sabbath rest strengthen your trust in God’s provision and timing?
