*TOPIC: CHOOSING GOD OVER MEN*
*ANCHOR SCRIPTURE: GALATIANS 1:10 (NKJV), 1 SAMUEL 15:24 (NKJV)*
“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
*“Then Saul said to Samuel, ‘I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.’”*
*Devotional Message*
So far, we have seen that lack of intimacy with God is a major hindrance to hearing and recognizing the voice of the Shepherd. Yesterday, we also discovered that many believers come to God with already-made conclusions, unwilling to accept any answer other than what they have already decided.
Another critical barrier to hearing and following God’s voice is the desire for hype, human approval, and acceptance. Many people are more willing to please men than to obey God. In such cases, the problem is not hearing God—the problem is choice.
Some believers already know what God has said, yet they choose to disobey Him because of reputation, fear of rejection, or the opinions of others. Their decisions are already shaped by what men have said, not by what God has spoken. This kind of life values human approval above divine instruction.
King Saul is a clear biblical example. God spoke to him plainly and gave him clear instructions. Saul heard God correctly, but when it came to execution, he disobeyed. His reason was simple—he feared the people and wanted to please them. By choosing men over God, Saul lost his throne.
This is the same struggle many believers face today. They are not confused about God’s voice; they are conflicted about obedience. Until one becomes dead to self and chooses to honor God above personal reputation, progress will always be delayed. Such people end up blaming God for stagnation, when in truth, they failed on their part.
Jonah is another example. He heard God clearly but chose to go in the opposite direction based on his own will. The consequences of his disobedience were severe. Many believers today suffer unnecessary delays, losses, and pain—not because God did not speak, but because they chose not to act on what He said.
Hearing God is powerful, but obeying God is transformational. Breakthrough follows obedience.
*Prayer*
Father, forgive me for the times I have chosen the approval of men over obedience to You. Deliver me from the fear of people and the desire for reputation. Help me to die to self and to choose Your will above all else. Give me the grace not only to hear Your voice but also to obey it fully, regardless of the cost. Let my life bring glory to You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
