Dear Father,

When Samuel went to anoint a king from the house of Jesse, he first met Eliab, David's elder brother. But You said to Samuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him.” Yet, there is no record in Scripture that Eliab ever sought to know why, despite being the eldest of his brothers, he was not chosen.

Spiritual insensitivity is not difficult to identify. Sometimes the biblical mistakes people make, though they may seem far-fetched, recur in countless ways, over and again. This illustration raises questions of identity and intention: Do you know who you are, and what measures have you put in place to become that version of yourself? As opposed to simply accepting whatever life presents without even asking why.

Many of us have settled. The struggle to become may have proven difficult, so we stop caring whether or not we are rejected. Yet, not all rejections should be accepted with grace; some are invitations to seek answers or to chase harder. And I can’t help but think about how fruitless this pursuit would be if we count You out. For no one can truly know a man until they first know his Creator.
