Yesterday was Groundhog Day. “Punxsutawney Phil” reportedly saw his shadow, meaning winter will go on for six more weeks. According to statistics kept by the Pennsylvania's Groundhog Club, Phil has predicted 106 forecasts for winter and 21 for an early spring. Pundits have declared the animal’s accuracy rate at less than 50%. Why does this superstition continue? If a prophet kept giving me false prophecies, I’d stop listening to him. Deuteronomy 18:22 says, “when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.”
