Coin in the Fishâs Mouth
Do you remember the day the Lord Jesus called Simon Peter?
On the shore of the Sea of ââGalilee, as they were mending their nets, Jesus said to them:
âFollow me, and I will make you fishers of men.â
Matthew 4:19
Peter responded immediately. He left behind a boat full of fish, his livelihood, his family, and his security to serve God. From that day on, his life was no longer his own but the Lordâs.
Time passed.
One day, when they were in Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked:
âDoesnât your teacher pay the temple tax?â
Peter answered without hesitation:
âYes, he does.â
When he told Jesus this, the Lord revealed a profound truth:
âWhat do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect taxes, from their own sons or from others?â
Matthew 17:25
Peter replied:
âFrom others.â
Jesus said:
âThen the sons are free.â
Matthew 17:26
As the Son of God, Jesus did not have to pay taxes. But he chose humility and peace.
And here the miracle occurred.
âBut so that we do not offend them, go to the lake and cast a hook. The first fish you catch, open its mouth; you will find a coin. Take that and give it to me and you.â
Matthew 17:27
Peter obeyed without even realizing it.
And it happened exactly as Jesus had said.
The fish had a coin in its mouth.
God provided in an unexpected way.
