Coin in the FishтАЩs Mouth
Do you remember the day the Lord Jesus called Simon Peter?
On the shore of the Sea of тАЛтАЛGalilee, as they were mending their nets, Jesus said to them:
тАЬFollow me, and I will make you fishers of men.тАЭ
Matthew 4:19
Peter responded immediately. He left behind a boat full of fish, his livelihood, his family, and his security to serve God. From that day on, his life was no longer his own but the LordтАЩs.
Time passed.
One day, when they were in Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked:
тАЬDoesnтАЩt your teacher pay the temple tax?тАЭ
Peter answered without hesitation:
тАЬYes, he does.тАЭ
When he told Jesus this, the Lord revealed a profound truth:
тАЬWhat do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect taxes, from their own sons or from others?тАЭ
Matthew 17:25
Peter replied:
тАЬFrom others.тАЭ
Jesus said:
тАЬThen the sons are free.тАЭ
Matthew 17:26
As the Son of God, Jesus did not have to pay taxes. But he chose humility and peace.
And here the miracle occurred.
тАЬBut so that we do not offend them, go to the lake and cast a hook. The first fish you catch, open its mouth; you will find a coin. Take that and give it to me and you.тАЭ
Matthew 17:27
Peter obeyed without even realizing it.
And it happened exactly as Jesus had said.
The fish had a coin in its mouth.
God provided in an unexpected way.
