Dear Father,

The disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, and Peter asked, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” Jesus replied. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

This story is often told with emphasis on the part where Peter begins to sink, almost never acknowledging the remarkable courage he demonstrated in even attempting to walk on water. All the other disciples were in that same boat, yet none but one dared to step out into a boisterous sea. And though for a moment he sank, but for the most part, he walked.

We are told about how distracted he was by the wind, so much that he began to sink, often forgetting humanity’s natural tendency to fail on the first attempt when venturing into unfamiliar territory. We are told his faith wavered, but I’d rather be the man whose wavering faith led him to walk on water than be one with no faith at all to step out of the boat. His faith wavered, but his courage became a legacy.

When I think of Peter, I also think of the situations where the fear of failure has kept us from even trying.
