Dear Father,

When Blind Bartimaeus called unto Jesus for help, “Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.”
I wonder why Jesus would ask a man whose blindness was evident to everyone, what he needed. Then I realized this demonstrates the gap that often exists between what we need and what we request for.

Didn’t Jacob ask for his daily bread shortly after You promised him an entire territory? Aren’t our requests often inspired by our lack and limited knowledge of what we think we need? Isn’t it amazing that we even need Your help to make accurate and precise requests? I’m reminded of the scripture: “We know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit helpeth our infirmities with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

It’s amazing to realize that, like Jacob, our requests can sometimes be limited by our awareness of our identity. Sometimes, we ask for things You have already provided; other times, we ask when we should be knocking. The downside is that when we are unaware of the possibilities made available to us, we fail to walk in them and possess them.

Father, help us to pray as we ought to.
