GOD'S PERFECTION AND PURPOSE 3
A WORD FROM THE WORD:
"When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, 'If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.'" Exodus 13:17 NIV.
Yesterday we read how God permits His children to be afflicted in the process of working out His golden programme and purpose for them. God does not take glory in the suffering of His people; yet, He does not hesitate to use pain to train, build and establish His children. Through suffering, His children draw nearer to Him, understand His tender mercies, steadfast love, and kindness. The Spirit of God inspired Moses to use Deuteronomy 8 in explaining God's programme and purpose for bringing the Israelites to the wilderness. It was shorter for them to go from Egypt to Canaan through Philistine (Exodus 13:17-18), yet He took them through the wilderness, 'Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way.' (Numbers 21:4 NKJV).
God used their experiences to teach them humility, endurance and to test them, and examine the state of their heart. In the midst of it He was working His wonders before their eyes: their clothes did not wax old and their shoes were growing with their feet. Without buying and selling, the supply of over two million adult males, and much more number of women and children on transit did not run short in forty years.
What was the purpose?
1). 'He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.' (Deuteronomy 8:3 NLT).
2). That Israelites would learn to trust in God's ability to provide for them.
3). That they would not forget the God who supplied all their needs in the wilderness.
4). That they may keep the commands of the LORD their God to walk in His way and fear Him.
PRAYER BULLETS:
ABBA Father, I pray that I might receive understanding that some difficulties I face are for my training, correction and instruction in righteousness to make and mould me into a better disciple of the LORD Jesus.
Help me through the present wilderness of my life and service.
FURTHER READING:
Deuteronomy 8:1-10; 1 Peter 1:3-9.
