GOD USES BROKEN PEOPLE
KEY SCRIPTURES
Psalm 51:17 (KJV): “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Isaiah 61:1: “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…”
Judges 6:15–16: God’s call to Gideon despite his weakness
Luke 22:61–62 & John 21:15–17: Peter’s denial and restoration
INTRODUCTION
Many people believe God only uses the strong, the perfect, and the flawless. But Scripture reveals a different truth: God specializes in using broken people. Brokenness is not a disqualification—it is often the doorway to divine purpose. God does not waste pain; He redeems it.
SERMON MESSAGE
1. Brokenness Attracts God’s Presence
God is not repelled by brokenness; He is drawn to it.
God resists pride but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).
Brokenness produces surrender, and surrender releases God’s power.
When we stop pretending to be strong, God steps in with His strength.
Truth: God does not use who you pretend to be—He uses who you surrender to Him.
2. God Uses Broken People Throughout Scripture
Every major figure God used had visible cracks:
Moses struggled with fear and speech, yet God made him a deliverer.
David failed morally, yet God called him “a man after My heart.”
Gideon saw himself as weak, but God called him a mighty warrior.
Peter denied Jesus publicly, yet became a foundational leader of the church.
Lesson: Your past mistakes may explain your pain, but they do not cancel your calling.
3. Brokenness Produces Dependence on God
God allows brokenness so that we stop trusting ourselves and start trusting Him.
Strength without God leads to pride.
Weakness with God produces miracles.
God’s power flows best through yielded vessels.
2 Corinthians 12:9 shows us that weakness is not a problem—it is a platform for grace.
4. God Heals What He Uses
God does not only use broken people—He restores them in the process.
He binds wounds as He builds purpose.
He turns scars into testimonies.
He transforms pain into ministry.
Isaiah 61:3: God gives beauty for ashes—not ignoring the ashes, but redeeming them.
CASE STUDY
Peter the Broken Disciple
Peter boldly declared loyalty to Jesus but denied Him three times under pressure. His failure broke him emotionally and spiritually. Yet Jesus restored Peter, not by condemning him, but by recommissioning him.
Key Insight:
The same mouth that denied Jesus later preached at Pentecost and won thousands to Christ.
God didn’t discard Peter after failure—He reshaped him through it.
ACTION STEPS
1. Acknowledge your brokenness – Stop hiding your pain from God.
2. Surrender your wounds – Give God permission to heal what hurts.
3. Reject shame – Shame silences destiny; grace restores purpose.
4. Trust the process – God often uses brokenness as preparation.
5. Serve anyway – Don’t wait to feel “perfect” before obeying God.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q1: Does brokenness mean God caused my pain?
A: Not always. Some pain comes from life, choices, or people—but God redeems what He did not cause.
Q2: Can God still use me after repeated failure?
A: Yes. God’s mercy is not exhausted by your mistakes.
Q3: How do I know God is still with me in brokenness?
A: His Word promises He is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).
Q4: What if I feel unworthy to be used by God?
A: God qualifies those He calls; worthiness comes from grace, not performance.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, heal every hidden wound in my heart.
2. Lord, turn my pain into purpose and my scars into testimonies.
3. Deliver me from shame and restore my confidence in You.
4. Use my broken places as channels of Your glory.
5. Give me the grace to trust You even when I feel weak.
CLOSING DECLARATION
“I am not disqualified by my brokenness. I am a vessel in God’s hands. My weakness will reveal His strength, and my story will glorify His name.”
