Sometimes I see Christians complain of others posting photos of themselves helping the homeless and hungry. One Facebook friend suggested we “leave the camera at home.” That’s hard to do when most people nowadays use their smartphones to take pictures, but I understand what he meant. Jesus said in Matthew 6:2, “Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men.” However, ministries that specialize in helping the needy like Samaritan’s Purse show photos and videos of what they are doing so donors know how their money is used. During my outreaches, I like to take photos for myself and share them with friends. Except on rare occasions when it’s a unique situation, I avoid taking pictures of homeless individuals to protect their dignity. The Pocket Testament League that supplies me with gospels of John like it when I occasionally email them photos of people I give them to as proof they are being handed out. It all boils down to motive. “Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.” (Galatians 1:10 NLT)
