Perhaps King David still felt guilty about his affair with Uriah’s wife. He too was guilty of taking what wasn’t his; how do you punish a crime you were once guilty of? We seldom discuss the lingering and restrictive effects of guilt long after the incident has occurred. We often label ourselves “unworthy” to be agents of change in areas where we once failed, even when we now occupy positions of authority to make a difference. But doesn’t transformation keep old things buried in the past? Should we allow ourselves to be restricted by guilt when we are no longer guilty? The world doesn’t just need unscarred heroes to assume leadership positions; it also needs leaders who have learned obedience through experience--those who can speak from the depth of their own challenges and mistakes.
