I don’t have much sympathy for picky panhandlers. Yesterday after getting a bus ticket printed out at Union Station, someone approached me asking where I was going. I suspected this was a beggar who might’ve been transgender (I couldn’t determine what sex this person was). I replied, “Why do you want to know?” No particular reason was given. After I revealed my destination, this person asked for a few dollars to get something to eat. I replied, “I don’t have any money for you, but I got some snacks on me. I can offer you something to nibble on.” This person then asked, “What do you have?” I replied, “Does it matter?” It’s one thing if they have missing teeth or cannot eat certain things for dietary reasons. However, I perceived an entitlement attitude from this person. He/she changed their mind about the snacks after I offered a tract. Minutes later, I noticed this person walking around with food from Raising Cane’s. It appeared he/she was genuinely hungry, but I have no regrets not helping him/her. There are numerous food banks, soup kitchens, and other places Americans can go to receive assistance. I’ve seen too many “hungry” beggars trying to get money for drugs or alcohol. Still, I’m willing to interact with them because they are opportunities to share the gospel.
