Daily Devotion — April 9 | Mark 2:17 (NKJV)
Jesus Came for the Broken
Mark chapter 2 describes a moment when Jesus is eating with tax collectors and sinners. The religious leaders question His actions because they believe a teacher of God’s law should avoid such people. In their view, association with sinners was inappropriate.
Jesus responds with a powerful illustration. Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but those who are sick do. With this statement Jesus reveals the purpose of His mission. He came to rescue those who recognize their need for forgiveness and restoration.
The problem was not that some people were truly righteous and others were sinful. The deeper issue was humility. Those who believed they were already righteous could not see their need for God’s grace. Those who knew they were broken were open to repentance and transformation.
Jesus does not ignore sin, but He invites sinners to turn toward God. His presence among them shows His compassion and His desire to restore lives that have been damaged by sin.
For believers today this verse reminds us that Christianity begins with recognizing our need for God’s mercy. None of us approaches God because we are perfect. We come because we need His forgiveness and healing.
Reflection Questions
1. Do I recognize my ongoing need for God’s grace
2. Am I willing to admit my weaknesses and turn to Jesus for help
3. How can I reflect Christ’s compassion toward those who feel far from God
Prayer
Lord Jesus thank You for coming to call sinners to repentance. I acknowledge my need for Your mercy and forgiveness. Help me to walk in humility and gratitude for the grace You have given me. Teach me to show compassion to others who need Your love. In Jesus name Amen.
Practical Application
● Confess areas of weakness honestly before God
● Remember that grace is the foundation of your relationship with Christ
● Extend compassion to people who may feel distant from God
Takeaway Thought
Jesus came for those who know they need Him. When we admit our need for grace, we open the door to His healing and restoration.
