Their thinking reflected the common understanding of greatness in the world which often focuses on status, recognition, and authority. Jesus responded by calling the disciples together and teaching them a different definition of greatness. Instead of pursuing position or recognition, He explained that anyone who desires to be first must become last of all and servant of all. This teaching reversed the expectations of the disciples. In the kingdom of God, greatness is not measured by how many people serve you but by how willingly you serve others. Jesus Himself would later demonstrate this perfectly through His life and ultimately through His sacrifice on the cross. Servanthood requires humility and a willingness to place the needs of others before personal ambition. It reflects the character of Christ who came not to be served but to serve.
