The Necessity of Prayer – 4

Teaching Series – 4

“Seek, and you will find.”
— Matthew 7:7

Seeking requires much more concentration than simply asking. A school student may ask his father for a pencil. Even if the father delays in giving it, the child may not seem very anxious. But when he loses his pencil, how earnestly he searches for it! Until he finds it, there is no peace in his mind.

The Lord Jesus did not stop with saying, “Ask, and it will be given to you,” but He also said, “Seek, and you will find.” Whenever we lose something, the intensity of our search depends on how valuable that thing is to us. If we lose a small coin, we may search for a little while and then give up, because we have many more like it. But if we lose a gold necklace, how anxious and determined we become in searching for it! We turn everything upside down looking for it. We try to find out whether someone stole it. We ask everyone we meet if they can help us find it. Until it is found, we can hardly eat or sleep peacefully, because that necklace is precious to us.

Likewise, when the Lord Jesus says, “Seek, and you will find,” He wants to see what we are seeking and with how much sincerity, concentration, and wholehearted effort we are seeking it. Through this, our true spiritual condition is revealed.

Do we truly value the souls that are being lost and perishing? Or are we simply satisfied with the joy that we ourselves are saved and will go to heaven? If we have no burden or tears in our hearts for lost souls, and no effort to save them, then we are truly selfish people.

“If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.”
— Proverbs 2:4–5Likewise, when the Lord Jesus says, “Seek, and you will find,” He wants to see what we are seeking and with how much sincerity, concentration, and wholehearted effort we are seeking it. Through this, our true spiritual condition is revealed.
