TODAY'S MESSAGE THE TONGUE TEST – WHAT WE SAY REVEALS WHO WE ARE Your Mouth Is Telling on You Many people can hide their character for a while, but eventually their words expose them. A person may dress holy, speak in tongues in church, and quote scriptures publicly, yet the real condition of the heart will eventually come out through the mouth. Jesus said: > “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” — Matthew 12:34 Your tongue is not just making sounds; it is revealing your spiritual condition. A bitter tongue reveals a bitter heart. A proud tongue reveals a proud spirit. A lying tongue reveals a corrupt inner life. But a gracious tongue reveals a transformed heart. Some people lose relationships because of their tongue. Some destroy their destiny because of careless words. Some delay their prayers because their mouth is full of gossip, anger, and negativity. The truth is this: Your tongue is taking a spiritual test every day — and heaven is listening. Key Bible Verses James 3:5–6 > “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things... the tongue is a fire...” James compares the tongue to fire. A small flame can burn down an entire forest. In the same way, one sentence can destroy a family, ministry, friendship, or reputation. Luke 6:45 > “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good…” Jesus teaches that words are spiritual evidence of what is inside us. Proverbs 18:21 > “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” Words carry power. They can heal or wound, build or destroy, bless or curse. Ephesians 4:29 > “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth…” God cares not only about actions but also about conversations. 1. Your Tongue Reveals the Condition of Your Heart People often say: “I didn’t mean it.” But many times, words reveal hidden realities. When anger, jealousy, hatred, pride, or impurity fills the heart, the tongue eventually exposes it. A heart full of Christ produces: Encouragement Truth Peace Wisdom Kindness But a corrupt heart produces: Gossip Insults Lies Manipulation Constant negativity You cannot continually speak darkness and expect to walk in spiritual light. Spiritual Insight God listens beyond your public prayers. He also listens to your private conversations. How you talk to people matters to God. 2. The Tongue Has Power to Build or Destroy Many people underestimate words. But throughout scripture, words changed destinies. God created the world by words. A blessing from a parent changed generations. A curse destroyed lives. A confession brought healing. A denial brought regret. One careless statement can wound someone for years. Some children are still battling the effects of destructive words spoken over them: “You will never succeed.” “You are useless.” “Nothing good can come from you.” But godly words can restore broken souls. Proverbs 15:4 > “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life…” Ask yourself: Are your words producing life or pain? 3. A Controlled Tongue Is Evidence of Spiritual Maturity Many people think maturity is about how long someone has been in church. No. Real maturity is visible in speech. A mature believer knows: When to speak How to speak When to remain silent Not every attack deserves a response. Not every argument deserves your attention. Some Christians pray powerfully but cannot control their temper. That is spiritual danger. James 1:26 > “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue… this man's religion is vain.” Strong words from scripture. God is saying: If your tongue is uncontrolled, your spirituality is questionable. 4. Satan Uses the Tongue as a Weapon The enemy understands the power of words. That is why he promotes: Gossip Division Slander False accusations Complaining Toxic speech Many churches have been divided not by demons from outside, but by uncontrolled tongues inside. Some marriages are dying because of poisonous words. Some friendships never recovered because someone could not control their mouth. The devil knows that words can spread faster than fire. Spiritual Insight The tongue can become either: A weapon for hell or A vessel for God’s glory 5. God Wants Our Speech to Reflect Christ The goal is not merely “speaking positively.” The goal is becoming like Christ. Jesus spoke: Truth with compassion Correction with wisdom Authority with love Even when wounded, He did not speak evil. As believers, our speech should reflect: Grace Purity Wisdom Honesty Mercy People should hear your words and sense the presence of God Biblical Case Study: Peter and His Tongue Peter loved Jesus, yet his tongue exposed fear inside him. When Jesus was arrested, Peter denied Him three times. His words revealed the battle happening in his heart. But later, after restoration and the power of the Holy Spirit, the same Peter preached boldly and thousands were saved. This teaches us something powerful: A surrendered tongue can become a powerful instrument for God. Your mouth that once spoke anger can begin speaking healing. Your mouth that once spread gossip can begin preaching truth. God can transform your speech when He transforms your heart. Practical Action Steps 1. Examine Your Conversations Listen carefully to your daily speech. What dominates your words? Complaining? Anger? Gossip? Pride? Negativity? Or: Faith? Encouragement? Wisdom? Grace? 2. Pray Before Speaking Not every thought deserves expression. Some battles would disappear if people prayed before reacting. 3. Fill Your Heart with God’s Word A heart full of scripture produces healthier speech. What fills your heart eventually flows from your mouth. 4. Avoid Corrupt Environments Constant exposure to toxic conversations influences speech. Be careful who shapes your language and attitude. 5. Use Your Tongue for Ministry Speak life into people. Encourage the weak. Pray for others. Preach the gospel. Comfort the hurting. Let your tongue become a tool for heaven. Questions for Reflection 1. What do my words reveal about my heart? 2. Have my words hurt people more than helped them? 3. Do I speak differently in public and private? 4. Am I known for peace or conflict? 5. Would God be pleased with my daily conversations? Powerful Prayer Points 1. Father, purify my heart and cleanse my tongue in Jesus’ name. 2. Lord, remove every spirit of gossip, anger, lying, and corrupt speech from my life. 3. Holy Spirit, teach me to speak words that bring healing, wisdom, and life. 4. Every destructive word spoken over my destiny, I cancel it by the power of Jesus Christ. 5. Lord, let my speech reflect Your character and Your presence. 6. Set a watch over my mouth, O God, and help me speak with grace and truth. It is passed: At home Online In conversations During conflict Under pressure When angry When offended Anyone can sound spiritual for a moment. But daily speech reveals true spiritual condition. Today, God is not only asking for your hands. He is asking for your mouth. He wants your words surrendered to Him. May your tongue no longer spread fear, bitterness, and destruction.
