I believe there is some truth to the old adage, “God helps those who help themselves.” A retired government worker I often visit in Virginia has taken in people off the street. One homeless man, whom I’ll refer to as “Stan” (not his real name), used to reside there. During the past few days, he showed up at the house a couple of times, requesting money and rides to specific places. Yesterday, Stan complained that he had no money. My friend had given him $30 the day before and asked what he did with that. Stan spent it all on booze. Therefore, he was left at a bus stop without any money (buses within the city are free). I’ve ministered to Stan before. He has professed to know the Lord, but his actions contradict that claim. I heard him talk abusively to another man living at my friend’s house. A local ministry that offers assistance to the homeless refuses to allow Stan to return to their facility. Proverbs 19:19 says, “A man of great wrath will suffer punishment; For if you rescue him, you will have to do it again.”
