(1)" ‘O Lord…give me success today.’ Genesis 24:12 NIV WE SELDOM know ahead of time the full significance of what we do or don’t do in our work. The Bible simply says, ‘Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might’ (Ecclesiastes 9:10 NIV). Judaism, Christianity and Islam all trace their roots to Abraham—who was a farmer. Abraham was ‘…now old and well advanced in years’ (Genesis 24:1 NIV). So he realised the time had come to find a wife for his son Isaac. Since there were no Internet dating services in those days, he assigned the task to his ‘chief servant,’ Eliezer. The servant set out with a caravan of ten camels to the region Abraham had directed him. Finding a wife for your boss’s son was an important assignment that required considerable thought. Certainly, it isn’t a job you’d want to fail at. So the servant began his work with a prayer: ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today.’ Do you ever pray and ask God to make your work successful? People sometimes wonder if it’s okay to pray for your work to be successful. Of course! Now, if success is becoming your God, you will have to find a way to dethrone it. But generally speaking, if you can’t pray for the success of what you’re doing, you should start doing something else! Any good parent wants their child to succeed. Any wise employer wants their workers to succeed, because when they succeed the company succeeds. Here’s what God told His people: ‘Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do’ (Deuteronomy 29:9 NIV). DO YOU KNOW HIM? "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." - 1 Timothy 1:15 Man is not created for a life full of sin, illness and other misery. He was created to live with God, but man has sinned and this led to a separation between God and mankind. However, praise God, Jesus came into the world to save sinners. What does it mean to be saved? Born again Firstly, it means that you are born again. 'Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God' (John 1:12). What a great privilege to be a child of the supreme King. A spiritual life Secondly, it means that we receive a new spiritual life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: 'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here.' Peace Thirdly, it means that you receive peace. Jesus said: 'Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you' (John 14:27). You will only receive real peace when your sins are forgiven. 'But those who still reject Me… There is no peace for the wicked, says my God' (Isaiah 57:20-21). Free access to God's throne Fourthly, it means that you have free access to God's throne. You may come and live in God's presence. You are created in God's image so you can speak to Him and be in His presence. You are able to say like John did: 'Our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ' (1 John 1:3). Spirit, soul and body Fifth, it means you are healed in your spirit, soul and body. 'Worship the Lord your God… I will take away sickness from among you' (Exodus 23:25). Jesus does not only forgive the sinner, but He also heals the sick. Morning Prayer Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but [this] one thing [I do,] forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ⏤ Philippians 3:13-14 Prayer is the acid test of devotion. ⏤ Samuel Chadwick O Lord, You’ve taught us through Your apostle to forget what lies behind and to reach forward to what lies ahead. Give us the grace to let go of the past and press on toward the goal of our high calling. Help us to cast aside every weight and the sins that so easily trip us up, and to run with endurance the race set before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. This world pulls us back, holding us from aspiring heavenward. May we have the strength to resist these earthly temptations and instead be drawn toward the blessings of a heavenly life. Help us to live more and more for the things that are unseen and eternal. Earthly things, though sweet and beautiful, are temporary—like flowers that are fragrant today but wilted tomorrow. May these fleeting blessings remind us of You and turn our thoughts to You. Let us not rest in these temporary joys or build our hopes on them. Instead, teach us to rest in You and build our hopes on the enduring rock of Your eternity. Then, no matter what earthly disaster or loss comes our way, we will be safe and secure in You, our unchanging God. As we step into the world today, fill our hearts with thoughts of Your love and grace. Go before us, lead us, and help us follow You wherever You guide. Give us wisdom to respond rightly in every situation. Grant us courage to face difficulties and overcome obstacles. And give us gentle hearts so we may be a blessing to others.
