Breaking Free From Sexual Soul Ties and Ungodly Attachments
By Deborah T. Iluyemi
I felt a nudge to write this and I pray it blesses you as you read.
One thing many believers do not understand is that sexual intimacy is not just physical. There is also a spiritual and emotional dimension attached to it.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:16, “He who joins himself to a harlot becomes one body with her…”
This shows that sexual intimacy creates a connection beyond the physical.
A sexual soul tie is a deep emotional, spiritual, and unhealthy attachment formed through sexual intimacy outside God’s design. It is when a person becomes emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or sexually attached in a way that creates bondage, unhealthy dependency, confusion, obsession, or spiritual oppression.
Not every soul tie is evil.
There are healthy soul ties such as godly relationships, covenant friendships, marriage, and family bonds.
But ungodly sexual soul ties can leave people emotionally trapped long after the relationship has ended.
This is why some people struggle to move on even after a toxic relationship ends. Physically the relationship may be over, but emotionally and spiritually they still feel tied.
Sex was created by God and designed to be expressed within marriage between a husband and wife.
The Bible says in Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept undefiled…”
Sex outside marriage is fornication.
This is important because the world has normalized what God intended to be sacred.
Sex is deeply spiritual. It creates emotional, spiritual, and physical connection.
There are transfers that happen through sexual intimacy emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and sometimes behaviorally. And this has nothing to do with gender.
This is why some people notice changes in themselves after unhealthy sexual relationships.
Sometimes people carry emotional heaviness, confusion, unhealthy attachment, lust, emotional bondage, or spiritual oppression because of ungodly connections.
This is one reason God designed sex for marriage.
Sex within godly marriage creates covenant bonding, intimacy, safety, and unity. Outside God’s design, it often creates confusion, wounds, emotional instability, shame, and unhealthy attachments.
Few minutes of pleasure can ruin a person’s life spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and even physically when wisdom and discernment are ignored.
This is why purity matters.
I have seen people struggle for years trying to get over people they had sexual relationships with in the past, especially women.
Sometimes the relationship ended physically long ago, but emotionally they still feel tied.
This is why many people find themselves constantly going back to toxic relationships even when they know the relationship is unhealthy.
The connection was never properly broken emotionally and spiritually.
Some signs of unhealthy sexual soul ties can include:
Obsessive attachment
Difficulty letting go
Returning repeatedly to toxic relationships
Emotional bondage
Lustful thoughts
Constant emotional cravings
Feeling spiritually drained
Manipulation and control
Emotional instability
Feeling emotionally connected even after separation
Sometimes people know a relationship is unhealthy, abusive, or destructive, yet they still feel unable to disconnect emotionally.
This is one way unhealthy soul ties operate.
Another thing believers must understand is this:
Sexual soul ties are often strengthened through repeated sin, emotional dependency, trauma, manipulation, and unhealthy emotional attachment.
This is why discernment matters in relationships.
The enemy often uses sexual compromise to create confusion, bondage, and emotional instability.
This is also why many people carry emotional wounds from past relationships for years.
Some people are still emotionally connected to people from their past because the soul tie was never properly broken through healing, repentance, and deliverance.
And yes, deliverance is sometimes necessary because not every bondage is merely emotional.
Some connections open doors spiritually through sin, ungodly covenants, manipulation, abuse, or repeated sexual compromise.
This is why some people experience:
Oppression
Torment
Sexual dreams
Emotional heaviness
Lustful bondage
Constant cycles of toxic relationships
This is where prayer and deliverance become important.
The Bible says in John 8:36, “Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.”
Freedom is possible through Christ.
The blood of Jesus is able to cleanse, restore, heal, and break every ungodly attachment.
The first step toward freedom is repentance.
You must bring everything honestly before God.
Do not hide it.
Do not justify it.
Do not minimize it.
Repentance opens the door for healing and restoration.
Another important step is renouncing every ungodly connection and agreement.
You cannot continue entertaining what you are praying to break free from.
Some people are praying for freedom while still maintaining unhealthy emotional access to toxic people.
Healing requires boundaries.
Another important thing is renewing your mind.
The Bible says in Romans 12:2, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
Some people have become emotionally addicted to toxic cycles.
This is why healing and transformation are necessary.
Worship matters. Prayer matters. The Word of God matters. Deliverance matters. Healing matters. Godly community matters.
Another thing many people struggle with is shame.
But shame keeps people trapped silently.
Conviction draws you back to God. Shame pushes you away from God.
Do not allow shame to keep you from healing.
And let me say this carefully.
Breaking free from sexual soul ties is not always instant emotionally.
Sometimes healing happens in layers.
There may still be memories, emotional triggers, or moments where the pain resurfaces.
But continue submitting your heart to God.
The Lord is able to heal your emotions completely.
He can remove unhealthy attachments, emotional dependency, lust, shame, and the pain connected to past relationships.
And sometimes part of healing is learning to stop romanticizing people God is trying to deliver you from.
Another important thing is this:
Guard your future relationships wisely.
Do not build emotional intimacy carelessly.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your mercy, healing, and restoration.
Lord, I surrender every unhealthy emotional and spiritual attachment into Your hands.
By the blood of Jesus, break every ungodly soul tie, bondage, emotional dependency, and toxic connection operating in my life.
Deliver me from every oppression, lustful bondage, manipulation, shame, and spiritual heaviness connected to past relationships.
Heal every wound, trauma, and confusion connected to my past.
Renew my mind and help me to walk in purity, wisdom, healing, and freedom.
Teach me to guard my heart and honor You with my life and relationships.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
With love and blessings,
Yours in Christ,
