The second truth about man before the fall is that he was created as a tripartite being, consisting of spirit, soul, and body.
Man is essentially a spirit being. That's his real nature. He doesn't have a spirit; he is fundamentally a spirit being. He has a soul and he lives in a body.
This is not a theological abstraction. It is the biblical description of how God designed man to function.
"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."—1 Thessalonians 5:23
The spirit was the deepest part of man, the innermost sanctuary where God dwelt and where communion with God took place.
Before the fall, man's spirit was fully alive to God, sensitive to His voice, responsive to His leading, and perfectly united with His will.
The spirit was the organ of spiritual perception, the faculty by which man knew God and the things of God.
The soul was the seat of man's personality, his mind, his emotions, and his will. Through his soul, man thought, felt, and chose.
His mind was capable of reasoning perfectly. His emotions were pure and undefiled. His will was free to choose, yet perfectly aligned with the will of God.
There was no conflict between what man wanted and what God wanted, because man's desires were innocent and his heart was pure.
The body was the physical vessel through which man interacted with the material world. It was not sinful or shameful. It was good, very good, as God declared after creating it.
The body was the instrument through which man exercised dominion over the earth, through which he could work, enjoy, and steward the creation that God had entrusted to him.
These three parts were not in conflict. They were perfectly integrated, perfectly ordered.
The spirit was in communion with God. The soul submitted to the spirit. And the body served the soul. This was the harmonious state of original man.
