From Chaos to Beauty
“In the beginning…” the world was not calm, clean, or complete. It was dark, empty, and chaotic. Genesis 1:2 describes it this way: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
The Hebrew phrase tohu va-bohu paints the picture of a wasteland—unordered, wild, and without shape. Yet this is exactly where God begins His work. He does not wait for perfection. He does not avoid the mess. He moves into it.
Then come the first recorded words in Scripture: “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). And with His word, light breaks through darkness, and order begins to emerge from chaos.
This is more than the story of creation. It reveals the heart of God. He is the God who enters emptiness and brings fullness, who steps into confusion and brings peace, who transforms brokenness into beauty.
Throughout Scripture, we see this same pattern:
In Egypt, He brings deliverance through Moses.
In exile, He brings restoration through the prophets.
At the cross and the empty tomb, He brings resurrection through Jesus Christ.
God does not merely clean up what is broken—He creates something new.
As 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation: the old has gone, the new has come!”
No matter how chaotic life may seem, God still speaks light into darkness. He is still bringing beauty out of brokenness.
