The Necessity of the Incarnation
The fall created a problem that only God Himself could solve. Human beings had sinned, and the penalty for sin was death. But human beings could not pay the penalty for sin in a way that would restore others, because every human being was himself a sinner, under the same penalty, unable to save anyone else, unable even to save himself.
Angels could not save us. They are not of our race, not our kin, not capable of standing in our place. Animals could not save us. The blood of bulls and goats could cover sin temporarily, but it could not remove it. As the writer of Hebrews declares:
"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins." —Hebrews 10:4
What was needed was a mediator, one who could stand between God and man, one who was both fully God and fully man. As fully man, He could represent humanity, stand in our place, and pay the penalty for our sins. As fully God, His sacrifice would be of infinite value, sufficient to cover the sins of the whole world.
This is why the incarnation was necessary. God Himself had to become man. The eternal Son had to take on human flesh. The Word had to become flesh and dwell among us. There was no other way.
" For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time." —1 Timothy 2:5-6
Jesus Christ is that Mediator. He is the God-man, the unique intersection of divinity and humanity, the only one capable of bridging the chasm that sin had created.
