Wise Man, Foolish Man

And now we reach the conclusion of Jesus’ teaching on the Beatitudes. Where Jesus links all his teachings from chapter 5 and 6 to his conclusion here in 7. He says those who hears these words and acts on them will be like a wise man building his house upon a solid rock foundation. Here is the first point, Jesus Himself said that acting on His words is a part of the process.

If you are judging others without consideration for your position before God, you are a hypocrite. If you are filled with worry and anxiety because you are ignoring God's provision for the birds of the air or the lilies which God cares for, your eyes are on the temporary.

Jesus compares those who do not heed His word are like those who build their house on the sand. When trouble comes, it doesn't matter how beautiful the house you are building is if the foundation or lack thereof shifts the destruction of all efforts to build a life outside of Christ.

The preachers who teach acceptance of false teachings (prayers to Mary, the saints, acceptance of a sinful lifestyle without repentance, rejection of God's word in favor of tolerance) all are leading millions to build their churches on programs and the latest church growth trends are leading themselves and their followers to an eternity in Hell.

It doesn't matter if it's Joel Osteen preaching his Jesus-less gospel with a gorgeous building and millions of devoted followers or the Pope, they are building their life, both eternal and temporal on the sand. The destruction may not come upon them before judgement, but it is coming soon.

On the flip side of it, those who despite everything cling to God's word will survive when trouble here comes. They will endure mistreatment, will love those who do so and will pray for them to repent rather than seeking revenge. Those will be the ones left standing.

The people were amazed because He wasn't teaching them as the scribes did, who appealed to the authority of one of two different rabbis who apparently were very well known and respected, so the majority of rabbis were teaching in this manner, “Rabbi Shammai says this so we should follow him.”

Jesus was teaching them with an authority the previous rabbis did not possess. He appealed to the authority of God and countered the idea that this ritual or that long winded prayer could affect or accomplish anything other than make a show of righteousness for the world to see. Jesus is NOT just a prophet, not just a good teacher, He was God in flesh and belief in any form of that false theology carries a steep cost.

Because Hell is more than just physical suffering for one's own sins, it is existing with the memory of every time they had opportunity to listen to God's word, every time they had the chance to repent of their sin and chose not to. Regret will haunt their memory eternally as they try repenting in Hell. And it won't matter.

Matthew 7:24-29
[24] “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [25] And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. [26] And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. [27] And the rain fell and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.” [28] When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; [29] for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
