*“Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.”*

Having explored the ministry of prayer and the ministry of the Word, we now begin another vital subject in the journey of salvation—the Ministry of the Holy Spirit.

One of the first things we must understand is that when the Holy Spirit comes upon a believer after he or she has surrendered their life to Christ, His primary assignment is not power but transformation.

The heart of man is the control center of life. Scripture teaches that the issues of life flow from the heart. The desires, actions, attitudes, and behavior of a person are all reflections of the condition of the heart. Therefore, before God entrusts a believer with power for ministry, He first desires to transform the heart.

In our anchor Scripture, Samuel told Saul that when the Spirit of God came upon him, he would be changed into another man. Notice that the emphasis was not initially on miracles, signs, or wonders, but on inward transformation.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit works within us to change our appetites, desires, and affections. He gives us a longing for holiness, righteousness, prayer, the Word of God, and the things that please the Father. The old desires begin to lose their grip as the new nature is cultivated within us.

This is important because carnality must first be dealt with before a believer can be entrusted with greater dimensions of spiritual authority. Power without character can destroy a person and bring reproach to the Kingdom of God. For this reason, the Holy Spirit begins with the circumcision of the heart, producing Christlike character before manifesting supernatural power.

However, the Holy Spirit is gentle. He does not force His work upon us. He works in partnership with our willingness, submission, and obedience. The more we yield to His dealings and embrace His process, the more transformation takes place within us.

Child of God, do not despise the seasons when the Holy Spirit is dealing with your character, motives, desires, and attitudes. These are the foundations upon which God builds a life that can carry His glory.

We shall continue next Sunday by God's grace.
