Caution in Prayer – 6

Lesson Series – 26

β€œThe fear of the Lord is to hate evil.”
β€” Proverbs 8:13

God and sin cannot dwell together in the same heart. God is completely holy, and there is no sin in Him. (1 John 1:5). The Lord Jesus said:

> β€œNo one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” β€” Matthew 6:24

When a person first receives salvation, a hatred for sin is surely born within him. If someone claims to be saved, yet shows no hatred toward sin, there is good reason to question the reality of that salvation.

Many people may accept the Lord Jesus as their Savior through their own reasoning and understanding, but that alone is not true salvation. Salvation is the work of the Holy Spirit. When God's Word brings conviction about the terrible nature of sin, and a person sincerely repents and determines to forsake it, the Holy Spirit creates a new life within that person's heart (John 3:5).

In such a heart, hatred for sin will certainly be present because the Holy Spirit dwells there (1 Corinthians 6:19). However, to maintain this spiritual condition, we must remain devoted to reading God's Word and to prayer.

Romans 8:13 says:

> β€œFor if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

Whenever the influence of the Spirit decreases, the influence of the flesh increases. Therefore, if we desire to preserve a spiritual mind and life, we must develop a consistent habit of prayer.

β€œIf we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”
β€” 1 John 1:6

Amen.
