NOT IN UNWORTHINESS
A WORD FROM THE WORD:
"For I received from the LORD what I passed on to you: The LORD Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said 'This is my body, which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of me: In the same way, after supper, he took the cup, saying,' This cup is the new testament in my blood, do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me' For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the LORD’s death until he comes. Therefore, whoever eats bread or drinks the cup of the LORD in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and the blood of the LORD." 1 Corinthians 11:23-27 NIV.
From the context of our foundational Scripture, Paul, the apostle, by the Holy Spirit's inspiration is laying emphasis on the importance of considering your personal conduct and relationship with God before you take part in the LORD's Supper. The need for a thorough self-examination and self-preparation that calls for an attitude of reverence, sincerity, humility and preparedness to receive the grace that is embedded in the ordained sacred act.
In the course of this self-examination in preparation of the LORD's Supper, there's every need for you to:
1). Know the reason for such - it is a remembrance of the LORD: bread - His body, cup - His blood. This is in itself a proclamation of the sacrificial and vicarious death of Christ Jesus.
2). No heaven-minded child of God can afford to partake on the LORD’s Supper in an unworthy manner because it presages mortal danger - sin against the LORD.
Unworthiness has everything to do with the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 4:4, 26). There should not be for you, a child of God, "more of me, and less of Jesus."
PRAYER BULLETS:
LORD Jesus, may I not be held responsible for Your death due to my actions and inactions. Help me to thoroughly examine myself before partaking in Your sacredly ordained act of remembrance.
FURTHER READING:
1 Samuel 7:2-4; Romans 12:1-2; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 4:4, 26.
