"THE ROOT AND THE FRUIT" ‘…A tree is known by its fruit.’ Matthew 12:33 NKJV IN A LETTER to George Whitefield, a leader of the Great Awakening, Benjamin Franklin wrote: ‘I can only show my gratitude for those mercies from God, by a readiness to help His other children and my brethren. For I do not think that thanks and compliments, though repeated weekly, can discharge our real obligations to each other, and much less those to our Creator. You will see in this, my notion of good works, that I am far from expecting to merit heaven by them. By heaven we understand a state of happiness, infinite in degree and eternal in duration. I can do nothing to deserve such rewards…The faith you mention certainly has its use in the world. I do not desire to see it diminished, nor would I endeavour to lessen it in any man. But I wish it were more productive of good works than I have generally seen it; I mean real good works; works of kindness, charity, mercy and public spirit; not holiday-keeping, sermon-reading or hearing; performing church ceremonies, or making long prayers filled with flatteries and compliments…The worship of God is a duty; the hearing and reading of sermons may be useful; but if men rest in hearing and praying, as too many do, it is as if a tree should value itself for being watered and putting forth leaves, though it never produce any fruit.’ In aiming to declare that salvation is by grace and not works, never forget that saving faith always produces good works! LIMITLESS POWER "Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." - Mark 11:24 Let us never limit God by the limitation of our own mind. In other words: believe in miracles. Everything is possible All the men used once by God believed in miracles. Jesus said in Mark 9:23: ‘Everything is possible for one who believes.’ We read many stories in the Bible about how God answered the prayers of ordinary people and helped them out of the most impossible situations. Moses, Jehoshaphat, Asa, Nehemiah, Elijah, Daniel; they all prayed, and the Lord heard and delivered them from the most impossible situations. They did not look at the circumstances but believed God and His never-failing Word. ‘This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of Him’ (1 John 5:14-15). Positive & persistent prayer Positive and persistent prayer is a big secret. To receive ‘everything we ask Him’ we must know the will of God. When Daniel discovered in the books that the exile would not last longer than 70 years, this man began to pray for a powerful deliverance. That caused a lot of opposition from the evil one, but Daniel had discovered the truth in the Scripture, so he persisted in positive prayer and the mighty answer came! Elijah knew it was going to rain and he waited for it, for God had said ‘I will send rain on the land’ (1 Kings 18: 1). That is why Elijah too persevered in positive prayer. And the rain came! Jesus said: ‘Here I am, I have come to do Your will’ (Hebrews 10:9). MP.i. Morning Prayer The LORD [is] gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD [is] good to all: and his tender mercies [are] over all his works. ⏤ Psalm 145:8-9 God’s mercy is deeper than we can comprehend and reaches further than we imagine. ⏤ John Newton O God, our Father, we praise Your name; we extol You; we worship You! You are great and greatly to be praised; Your greatness is unsearchable! One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts. We would speak of the glorious honor of Your majesty and of Your wondrous works. We would make known Your mercy. You, Lord, are gracious and full of compassion—slow to anger and of great mercy. You are good to all—Your tender mercies are over all Your works. All Your works shall praise You, and Your saints shall bless You. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations. You uphold Your children who fall and raise up all those who are bowed down. The eyes of all wait upon You, and You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. You are near unto all who call upon You—to all that call upon You in truth. You will fulfill the desire of those who fear You; You also will hear their cry and will save them. You preserve all those who love You. We thank You that we may have such assured confidence in You. May we have grace to live before the world, so as to prove our sincerity. Help us to keep the vows we made on Sunday when we went to Your sanctuary. May our weekday life be as good as our Sunday promises. The spirit is willing—we desire to live worthily; but the flesh is weak. Strengthen all good purposes in our hearts, and may we be enabled to live righteously in the world.
