Daily Devotion: Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I put on you is light.”
Being consumed by worry and anxiety is exhausting, yet we never seem quite able to stop the vicious cycle by changing our attitude towards the circumstances causing the trouble. “What if?” Is that a question you often ask yourself? “But what if this or that doesn’t work out? What if something bad happens? What if I am not strong enough?”
We’ve been taught by society to always look to the future, which is a good thing, but it also brings with it the anxiety of what lies ahead. Do you sometimes feel your heart pounding or experience shortness of breath at the mere thought of what may happen tomorrow? You can change that.
This is something we need to consciously practice. If you feel yourself beginning to get anxious and worried, turn your thoughts away from those negative feelings and give your problem to God in prayer. Do it until it becomes and ingrained habit. We need to trust God more and stop believing that we can actually change things on our own. Remember that everything that happens in the life of a Christian has a purpose, whether good or bad, and that purpose serves God’s will for your future. God promised us that He will take care of us and that He only has good intentions. (Jeremiah 29:11)
Here are some facts that you may find reassuring:
God tells us to cast all our burdens upon Him. Psalm 55:22: “Leave your troubles with the LORD, and he will defend you; he never lets honest people be defeated.”
God tells us to ask for help if we struggle to find answers. James 1:5-6: “But if any of you lack wisdom, you should pray to God, who will give it to you; because God gives generously and graciously to all. But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt at all.”
Everything will work out according to God’s plan for our lives. Romans 8:28: “We know that in all things God works for good with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose.”
It is not possible to worry AND meditate on the Lord at the same time. Isaiah 26:3-4: “You, LORD, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you. Trust in the LORD forever; he will always protect us.”
Next time you catch yourself fretting about things, keep in mind that you have an anchor to cling to. God is that anchor and He is steadfast and firm and will not let you drown in your troubles. He will bring resolution.
So, do not waste any more time by worrying, use that energy to fulfill God’s purpose for your life and wipe away the anxiety to make room for the joy and peace that the Spirit provides. After all, you cannot change anything by just worrying about it. It serves no purpose.
Matthew 6:27: “Can any of you live a bit longer by worrying about it?”
