TODAY'S MESSAGE

SERMON TITLE:

THE CHURCH MUST NOT SLEEP.

Wake Up Before It Is Too Late!

One of the greatest dangers is not the storm outside—it is the sleeping church inside the storm.
A sleeping soldier cannot defend his nation. A sleeping watchman cannot warn the city. A sleeping driver endangers everyone in the vehicle. Likewise, a sleeping church cannot fulfill God's purpose.

Today, the enemy is working tirelessly. Darkness is spreading. Sin is increasing. False teachings are multiplying. Many believers are becoming spiritually cold. This is not the time for the Church to sleep; it is the time to arise.
The Church is God's light in a dark world. If the light sleeps, darkness will dominate.

Key Bible Texts

1. Romans 13:11-12
> "And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep..."
Paul reminds believers that spiritual awakening is urgent because our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. Spiritual sleep is living without urgency, passion, or sensitivity to God's voice.
2. Ephesians 5:14
> "Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."
God calls His people to rise from spiritual complacency so that His light may shine through them.
3. Matthew 26:40-41
Jesus found His disciples asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane and asked:
> "Could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray..."
While Jesus was praying, His closest disciples were sleeping. Because they slept in prayer, they were unprepared for the coming trial.
4. Revelation 3:2
> "Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain..."
The Church is commanded to stay alert and strengthen what still remains alive.
1. A Sleeping Church Loses Spiritual Sensitivity
When Samson slept on Delilah's lap, he lost his strength without realizing it (Judges 16).
Many churches have become comfortable with entertainment while neglecting prayer, holiness, and the Word of God.
Signs of spiritual sleep include:
Prayer becomes a burden.
Sin becomes acceptable.
Worship loses passion.
Evangelism is neglected.
The voice of the Holy Spirit is ignored.
A sleeping believer can sit in church every week yet remain spiritually powerless.
2. A Sleeping Church Gives the Enemy Opportunity
1 Peter 5:8
> "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil... walketh about..."
The devil never sleeps.
While believers sleep spiritually:
Families are attacked.
Children are influenced by worldly values.
Communities drift from God.
False doctrines spread.
When the Church stops watching, darkness advances.
3. A Sleeping Church Misses Divine Opportunities
In Matthew 25, five wise virgins remained prepared while five foolish virgins were not ready when the bridegroom arrived.
The sleeping virgins missed the greatest moment of their lives.
Many believers miss:
Divine appointments.
Opportunities to witness.
Open doors for ministry.
Miracles prepared by God.
God often moves while people are awake spiritually.
4. A Watchful Church Carries God's Power
Throughout the book of Acts, the early Church remained devoted to:
Prayer
Fellowship
The Word
Evangelism
As they watched and prayed:
The sick were healed.
Souls were saved.
Demons fled.
Nations were transformed.
Revival has never been born from spiritual laziness. It comes through people who seek God earnestly.

Biblical Story:

The Sleeping Disciples in Gethsemane

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus invited Peter, James, and John to watch and pray with Him.
Instead, they slept repeatedly.
Hours later:
Judas betrayed Jesus.
Peter denied Jesus three times.
The disciples fled.
Their physical sleep reflected a deeper spiritual unpreparedness.
The lesson is clear: if we fail to pray before the battle, we may fail during the battle.

Practical Action Steps

1. Build a consistent daily prayer life.
2. Read and meditate on God's Word every day.
3. Fast regularly as the Holy Spirit leads.
4. Share the Gospel with others.
5. Be active in serving faithfully in your local church.
6. Avoid distractions that dull your spiritual life.
7. Stay sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Deep Spiritual Insights

Spiritual sleep begins gradually through neglect of prayer and the Word.
Revival begins when believers awaken before they ask others to awaken.
The greatest victories are often won in the place of prayer before they are seen publicly.
God is still looking for watchmen who will stand in the gap for their generation.

Questions for Reflection

1. Am I spiritually awake or merely religious?
2. Has my passion for prayer grown cold?
3. What distractions are putting my spiritual life to sleep?
4. If Christ returned today, would I be ready?
5. Am I helping awaken others or contributing to spiritual complacency?

Prayer Points

1. Father, awaken every sleeping area of my spiritual life in the name of Jesus.
2. Lord, restore my hunger for Your Word and for prayer.
3. Every spirit of complacency and lukewarmness, be broken in Jesus' name.
4. Fill Your Church with fresh fire, holiness, and boldness.
5. Raise faithful watchmen and intercessors in this generation.
6. Let revival begin in my heart, my family, my church, and my nation.
7. Keep me faithful and spiritually alert until the return of Christ.

Conclusion:
Arise, Church!

The world does not need a sleeping Church—it needs a praying, holy, Spirit-filled, and mission-minded Church. This is the hour to awaken, to stand firm, and to shine as the light of Christ in a dark generation.
Romans 13:11 declares, "Now it is high time to awake out of sleep."

Do not wait for someone else to begin. Let revival begin with you. Rise in prayer. Rise in holiness. Rise in faith. Rise in evangelism. The Church must not sleep, because the King is coming soon. May we be found watching, working, and waiting faithfully when He returns in Jesus Name.Amen.
