12:38-42
After the scribes and Pharisees have seen healings, and heard teachings regarding evil spirits and denied Gods power in these works and ascribed the power of Satan to be the reason for the miracles. It is then that they ask Jesus for a sign.
Is it to verify His identity? Solidify their beliefs? No. In fact, if He had done a miracle for them, even when the miracle was done, they would not believe it. They've already seen signs and denied them all. And Jesus knew this.
He calls them evil and adulterous, refusing to give them that sign, instead pointing to signs they could see if they just looked hard enough. Jesus says, and uses two comparisons.
First He says you will receive the sign of Jonah. Now Jonah was a prophet of God who was extremely prejudiced against the people of Ninevah. Granted, the people of Nineah were not good people. They were offering human sacrifices, had temple prostitutes for pagan rituals.
So Jonah didnt exactly have bad reasons for not liking them. He had very good reasons to balk at God giving him orders to go preach to these Ninevites. So what was this sign of Jonah? He tells us. As Jonah decides to run from God so the Ninevites dont repent, God prepares a fish. Some texts change the word to ‘whale’ to accommodate the size of a sea animal required to swallow an entire man.
Historically, there have been numerous reports of Sailors swallowed by Giant Grouper, or Whale sharks. The only reason I am mentioning it is because modern simpletons claim that since whales are not fish, but mammals, they declare an error in the Bible. But that is wholly unnecessary.
Jonah attempted to flee in the opposite direction of Ninevah and a great storm almost destroyed the ship he fled on. Jonah knew it was his fault, not the ships captainor crew. So they tossed him into the sea and he was swallowed by this fish or whale where he stayed for three days.
Some even hypothesize that Jonah was dead for those three days of travel. And that after the third day he would return to preach after being vomited up on the Ninevah shores and returned ‘alive’ on the third day.
This is the only sign the wicked scribes and Pharisees would receive. That on the third day, another prophet of God would raise from the dead and return to preach repentance and forgiveness.
It's here that Jesus tells the scribes and Pharisees that they will stand on the day of judgment with the pagan worshipping, child sacrificing men of Ninevah and those people will essentially be pointing at these Jews saying, we'll at least we're not the Jews from Jesus's day. I don't think today it's possible to convey the depths of hatred these jews had for the Ninevites. So for Jesus to tell them they would be worse off standing before God than Ninevites was an explosive statement.
Jesus also adds a comparison to the Queen of the South and His current generation. The Queen of the South was enthralled by Solomon's wisdom and traveled the known world to seek him out for his wisdom. And even she will condemn the Jews on the day of judgment because the wisdom of Jesus was so much more than Solomon.
What's the lesson here? People seeking miraculous signs is not what the Lord wants. Some assume that there are miracles littered across the entirety of the Bibles timeliness. And that's not true. In fact there are periods of several hundred years where not only are there no miracles, there is no word or revelation from God.
The only miracle we need is the Resurrection. It is the only one that matters.
[38] Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” [39] But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign; and so no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet; [40] for just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. [41] The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. [42] The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
