Dear Father,

There's a phrase about how impossible it is for twenty friends to remain friends for twenty years. Perhaps twenty is a large number to begin with, so I thought instead about the possibility of two people committing to friendship against all odds. Like my best friend, who is now gone, circumstances do not fail to present themselves in the lives of two people any less than they do in twenty. Today, however, more than unexpected occurrences, I pondered the separation of friends by faults.

Perhaps we can all relate to relationships gone wrong. More often than not, especially when it matters, we do not leave without asking the question: What was my fault? I came across a passage that says, "This is what the Lord says: 'What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me?'" Much more than a question of curiosity, it reveals a loving depth--to walk away only after finding closure and, perhaps, consolation.

You also look for what went wrong?! I've experienced Your leading. I've seen how You love, and I've seen the latter days of people You call friends. The peace, growth, and assurance You offer are reason enough to seek answers to humanity's distance from You. If You are good, why are we far? If we are far, what was Your fault?

Yet there is more to relationships than faults, and perhaps distance itself is proof that sufficient knowledge is lacking. Still, You seek an answer from each one of us:

What fault did you find in me?
