Romans 2:11 says, “There is no partiality with God.” But when God rejected Cain’s offering, there must have been a reason. 1 John 3:12 says, “Let us not be like Cain, who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own works were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.” From this we understand that Cain’s offering was not accepted because it was not according to God’s command. What did Cain bring? It is written, “Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord.” Genesis 4:3. But what did Abel bring? “And he brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat” (Genesis 4:4). Abel’s offering was according to God’s command. Because after the fall of Adam and Eve, man's communication with God was severed. Isaiah 59:2. Therefore, fallen man can no longer come directly to God. If he is to come, he must come through the atonement of Christ. That is why God gave Adam and Eve the first animal sacrifice and clothed them with garments of skin instead of the fig leaf robe. Genesis 3:21. The fig leaf robes are their righteousness, which is not acceptable to God. The garment of skins represents the atonement of the Lord Jesus. That is why it was accepted. The Lord Jesus is the sacrificial lamb appointed by God. The garment of skins is the righteousness of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, Cain's offering was a symbol of his self-righteousness - that is why it was not accepted. But Abel's offering was a symbol of the atonement of Christ, that is why it was accepted. "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:17.
