St. Martha
St. Martha lived in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem with her brother Lazarus and Sister Mary. She was born of a noble family and her father was Syro (the duke of Syria) and her mother was Encharia. As inheritance from their parents Martha had her property at Bethany, Lazarus had the part of Jerusalem and Mary got the castle of Magdala. When Jesus and his disciples came to the house of Martha and Mary, she opened the door and prepared for serving food for Jesus and His disciples. When Mary sat at the foot of Jesus to hear his preaching and not helping Martha in the preparation of food, Martha complained to Jesus about Mary as she was not helping her. But Jesus said \'Mary has chosen what is better\'. Martha was one of the few persons who first realized and believed that Jesus was the Son of God and Messiah. When Lazarus died when Jesus was not in Bethany, Martha sent word about his death to Jesus. Jesus came to Bethany after four days and received by Martha. Jesus wept for the death of Lazarus and told that Lazarus would rise again to life. For this Martha said to Jesus \'I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day\'. Jesus replied \'I am the resurrection and the life\' and for this Martha replied \'Yes Lord, I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world\'. Jesus then resurrected Lazarus four days after death (John 11:25\-27). Legends say that Martha went to Tarascon, a place in the Southern France. There the people told her that there was a dragon called Tarasque in the forest between Arles and Avignon, which was a man\-eater and a constant threat to the population there. Martha went there and showed the cross to the dragon and sprinkled holy water on it. The dragon stood still like a sheep and Martha tied the dragon with her girdle and brought it to the city. But on seeing the dragon, the people rose against it and killed it with spears. The dragon did not respond to the attacks by the people but simply kept quiet.
St. Martha is the patroness of cooks, domestic servants, hotel keepers, house maids, house wives, laundry workers, servants, servers, single laywomen and also travelers.
