Roman governor Pontius Pilate concluded that Jesus was innocent of the charges against him. After questioning Jesus, Pilate publicly declared, "I find no fault in this man". Despite his conviction, Pilate caved to mounting political pressure from the Jewish crowds and religious leaders who threatened to report him to Caesar. To protect his position and prevent a riot, Pilate ultimately handed Jesus over to be crucified while famously "washing his hands" of the blame. "I am innocent of this man's blood. The responsibility is yours!"
