Jesus cursed the fig tree as a living parable and prophetic sign. The leafy tree looked fruitful from afar, but had no edible figs. Jesus used it to symbolize the spiritual sterility of the Temple in Jerusalem, which had outward religious show but lacked true spiritual fruit. Just as the deceptive tree withered from the roots, Jesus signaled that the existing religious system and the physical Temple would face judgment and destruction. For us, God expects active faith, mercy and repentance rather than empty external compliance.
