Psalm 51:1-2 NASB
"Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithfulness; According to the greatness of Your compassion, wipe out my wrongdoings. Wash me thoroughly from my guilt And cleanse me from my sin."
To be washed clean from our guilt isn't a result of our baptism in water or even our works of confession and pleas of mercy, due to our sorrowful regret over our wrongdoings. The forgiveness of sin, and our rightstanding with God, is according to the faithfulness and compassion of God.
